Taurine Benefits - are they real or hype?

A very balanced approach:

I still take 4 gm/day in the morning. He says ITP is running it this year. The controversy is about what is happening to populations. Should we test tissue somehow and supplement accordingly?

A read of this thread reminds me that many gurus we read are overly eager to make pronouncements in advance of the facts. Whatever happened to the venerable, “I don’t know” when the only certainty is that our current understanding is significantly incomplete. As a population question, the best evidence suggests that taurine’s effects are likely to be age, fitness, diet, and gene dependent. As a person question, the high end challenge should be based on metrics whereas the low end question could be, “Do I feel or perform better?” I’m at the low end. I’m a tad faster and slightly less fatigued when hiking steep hills if I take taurine – so I take it and wait for better science.

“Here we show that SLC6A6, but not exogenous taurine, is essential for mitochondrial metabolism and cancer cell growth.” The implication here seems unclear.

Two years ago my osteopenia was able to be reversed to normal on my DEXA bone scan… only change that followed the bad report was Taurine in my coffee a teaspoon full… each morning for a year.

Tomorrow getting DEXA bone scan… if my score is pushed back more… I think we have a good N=1 for daily Taurine .

That is very good news @Agetron! Be sure to let us know. I want to get a DEXA but mostly just to get a little better idea of how hard I can push certain routines at the gym.

The news is fantastic.

A continued reversal. Literally unheard of in a person already exercising and with low fat body mass.

Typically you can do muscle resistance and get some reversal…but if you are already on it for years… likely isn’t going to change your numbers.

DEXA Sexy pics… soon.

Is there any reason to believe that the reversal isn’t due to the anabolic effects of your testosterone optimization protocol, which also is likely keeping your estrogen on the higher end as well? Combined with weight bearing exercise, I’d not be surprised to see continuing improvement in bone mineral density over a period of years.

David asked: possible reversal isn’t due to the anabolic effects of your testosterone optimization protocol - combined with weight bearing exercise.

Before my first DEXA I had been on TRT already for 2 years (started in 2020) and doing same muscle resistance machines for 6-years (started in 2018). My opinion that all potential for solid bone density was there and yet I had osteopenia. The only change in my routine was adding a teaspoon of Taurine to my morning coffee – after one year moved out of osteopenia. Now after two years moved even further into a solid T-score. My N=1 is its the Taurine helping my TRT and muscle resistance workouts. Thinking I might even move to a tablespoon dose of taurine in the morning coffee.

Took my DEXA Bone Density scan on Monday, February 16. Cost covered by insurance for every 2-years.

My first DEXA scan ( Dec, 2022) shocked me to discover I had osteopenia - despite regular resistance exercise, TRT and supplements of vitamin D & Calcium.

I read on this forum a news article about Taurine as having potenital to reverse bone degeneration.
September of 2022

I started putting a full teaspoon of Taurine in my coffee every morning for a year and got these results.

So here is an overview of improvement for the past 4-years.

DEXA scan Jason current T - score Normal.pdf (625.5 KB)

DEXA scan Jason Lumbar T score past 4 years – osteopenia age 64 - to normal age 66 and - improved normal almost age 68.pdf (641.5 KB)

DEXA scan Jason T score past 4 years – osteopenia age 64 - to normal age 66 and - improved normal almost age 68.pdf (603.8 KB)

So I am curious guys… why would anyone over the age of 50 years old – not add a teaspoon of taurine to their morning coffee or other drink? It is a cheap supplement found on Amazon. My brand is Bulk Supplements - costs $24 for 1 years worth.

Taurine

One of the better finds on this longevity site.

How does that taurine make your coffee taste? And does it mix in well without clumps?

Ahhh… I think we have a convert to the darkside. Absolutely no taste difference in the coffee with the brand I posted. I use Keurig Dark Magic Coffee – I put in my taurine, creatine and collegen - bascially a teaspoon of each. Add a bit of honey and French vanilla creamer. I stir the whole time the coffee is coming out of the Keurig Cup - no clumps. My morning coffee.

Before my workout I have another cup of Dark Magic with a spoon full of creatine, glycine and honey/french creamer.

Have you ever weighed out how many grams of taurine is in the teaspoon? I get nearly 4 grams in my magnesium taurate capsules that I take every day.

Yeah… no.

I just shovel my teaspoon in and pull out a heaping load… and drop it in… same for creatine and collagen. They are all cheap… error towards a bit more… then less.

I just realized you only use a tsp!? Did I miss a second dose per day?

I’m using a 1/2 tablespoon which is 6 grams for mine (unless my math is failing me)

Just in the morning coffee … it is a heaping spoonful…

However, Taurine is cheap and results great… I am going to start adding 2 teaspoons full.

Can do again next February… Valentine’s special… scans are $90… I think normally it is about $230.

I get increased level energy when I go from 4-5 gr to 8-10 gr. Let us now if you observe something that can be related to an increased dose of taurin.

That is great news - and a complete surprise to me !!! Thank you for posting this - would much rather take Taurine than those questionable Pharma bone builders!!! The additional bonus of Taurine is that it is anti- fibrotic. Since I tend to generate fibrosis (even after knee replacement!!! My body interpreted the metal parts as foreign objects and generated so much Arthrofibrosis to cover it that I could no longer walk.) Your post for bone health only adds to Taurine’s appeal! thank you!

I have gained so much help on this site… which is where I learned about Taurine.

I hope you get similar benefits. Something so cheap and easy to do… a teaspoon or a bit more of Taurine daily.

Let us know how it goes.

As a guy who roasts his own beans, the only thing I disagree with is that I should ruin a perfect cup of coffee with anything: sugar, cream, taurine, gin.

yes, you are defintely a good N1 experiment. Here are two publications that support your increased bone status.

Taurine is involved in bone development and maintenance, influencing osteoblasts, osteoclasts, and chondrocytes…

“The recent finding that bone tissue contains high amounts of taurin1; has prompted the investigation of taurine’s role in bone. This has resulted in the surge of reports yielding two major breakthroughs. First, taurine stimulates bone formation. Second, it inhibits bone resorption, thereby preventing alveolar bone loss. Apart from this, beneficial effects of taurine on fenestration, healing of wounds and following tooth extraction have been discussed. In a review related to osteoporosis, alveolar bone loss and drug development, Wyhn2argued that it is time to look beyond bisphosphonate to other drugs that might prevent the resorptive phase of alveolar bone loss; bisphosphonates are the only available remedy now and have been for many years. He suggested that any new agent must have the ability to block the production of inflammatory factors and to arrest the cause of osteoporosis. The recent finding that taurine inhibits bone resorption indicates that it and perhaps some of its analogues deserve further consideration as new therapeutic agents.”
