Retardation of the senescence of cultured human diploid fibroblasts by carnosine
mcfarland1994.pdf (1.8 MB)
Just to give an update. After quite a bit of trial and error it appears that my second source of tingling arose because I stopped supplementing with active B6 as part of resolving the first source. This caused a different source of tingling.
B6 I find interesting because the inactive form inhibits the active. I worry about how many things tend to come with extra B6 because you can accidentally overload the system with unmetabolised B6. I am currently running my full stack with allicin, but without carnosine. If the absence of tingling continues for a few more days I will probably reinstate the carnosine.
Lots of things can cause tingling.
I do take carnosine, but not B6, and have no tingling. Didnāt have tingling even before carnosine.
Anyone else feeling itchier after taking Beta-alanine? I have cut back from 1.5 g to 1 g, but I still feel itchier than normal.
Yes. To me it feels the same as a niacin flush. So I put it in my smoothie and drink gradually then I dont get the itchy flush.
Hmm⦠The itchiness lasts all day long. Maybe I am taking too much. How much are you all taking? I am taking 1 g of beta alanine.
Iām taking 1.5 g. Frankly, its difficult for me to drink it slowly enough to avoid some flushing.I almost have to forget its there, so Iām talking about hours to consume a smoothie.
I put it in my morning coffee 2.5 grams in the first two 11 oz. mugs. It is not producing any side effects at this level. I can barely taste the difference in my coffee at this level of dilution.
Same. I put it in my coffee. However, itās definitely the beta-alanine causing the itching. Itās like a whole body mild itchiness. Reducing the amount I take reduces the itching, and I didnāt have any itching before taking it.
It also seems to make the side effects from my hair tonic worse as well. The rashes tend to get brighter red with the beta-alanine. Maybe because I take NMN as well? Too much niacin-like supplements?
I ordered a kilo of it from Amazon. Itās quite cheap, but I am wondering if I am getting the āreal dealā because I donāt experience any itching. I am not currently taking niacin.
The brand I am buying gets good reviews and some mention the itching that occurs. I wonder if itās like niacin that is dose-dependent depending on the person?Amazon.com
This is what I bought. Less itching (barely noticeable) today as I have dropped down to 1 g a day from 1.5 g.
Was on the fence with carnosine. The article below tipped the scales in favor of supplementing.
Carnosine: Multipurpose Anti-Aging Nutrient | Ward Dean, MD.
Cells grown in culture have a limited capability to replicate before they begin to show signs of old age, and die. The viability of the cells grown in culture is measured in population doublings. Dr. Leonard Hayflick determined that normal fetal human fibroblasts (usually obtained from skin, lung, or foreskins) have a population doubling potential (PD) of about 50 times. This has become known as the Hayflick Limit. Cells originally taken from adults of various ages have a reduced PD, based on the age of the donor (i.e., the older the donor, the fewer PDs) (Fig. 5).
Using carnosine added to culture medium in physiologic amounts (i.e., concentrations that approximate those of human tissue), scientists in Australia and Ireland have successfully broken the Hayflick limit. In a series of studies, using cells cultured with and without carnosine, the Australian team repeatedly obtained increased survival of their cultures, ranging from six to 11 PDs (potential doubling) more than the control cultures (Fig. 6).
In other studies, the researchers added carnosine to cell cultures that were clearly showing signs of old age, and noted a rejuvenation of their appearance to that of younger cells. Finally, they intentionally contaminated some of the cell cultures with cancer cells. As the cancer cells began to proliferate and take over the culture, the scientists added carnosine to the culture medium. Within three weeks, the cancer cells were completely gone, and the cell culture went on to a normal lifespan. This led the authors to speculate about the potential anti-cancer properties of carnosine.
Of all of the hundreds of supplements that are being sold as anti aging remedies, Carnosine is one that can actually back it up with scientific research, as well as Astaxanthin and a few others.
It would be interesting to see a Carnosine+NAC+Glycine+Astaxanthin in a ITP trial, I suspect the outcome would be rather positiveā¦Rapamycin area maybe.
I did stop Carnosine because of the tingling from beta alanine. I want to be very sensitive to tingling because of the possibilities of indicating B12 or B6 issues. However, I may start it again.
Carnosine might be better than beta-alanine, based on the article below.

Well. Back to the British-Russian study. The researchers, who by the way around the same time announced that fruit flies live longer if given carnosine, discovered that mice live on average 20 percent longer if they are given carnosine in their drinking water [a]. A supplement containing a mix of beta-alanine and histidine [b] was less effective. The mice in the b-group hardly lived any longer than the mice in the control group [c].
I think the beta alanine comes from the carnosine, however. That is why the Carnosine tingles. It divides into beta alanine and histidine.
I tried beta alanine and found that I am allergic to it. So, I have stopped. I wonder if carnosine would have the same reaction?
I take 0.75g of beta-alanine a day and I donāt feel itchy.
LaraPo: May I ask - could you say something about your choice of dosing at the relatively low level of 250mg?
