Is there any reason you should take carnosine over beta-alanine? Or vice versa?
Beta-alanine is an amino acid that can be converted to carnosine in the body. Supplemental beta-alanine increases muscle carnosine levels more effectively than taking carnosine itself,
jsyk:
āBeta-alanine is an unflavoured powder so it doesnāt have any taste when mixed with water but the powder alone almost has a hint of sugary taste to it.ā
This is good to know because the powder is normally about half the price per gram than pills or capsules.

I was tingling after taking my main supplement stack and I wanted to know why. By a process of elimination I found it was carnosine. My understanding is that this is an effect of beta-alanine and is called paresthesia rather than peripheral neuropathy.
For now I am stopping carnosine to see if it is the only cause of tingling which I sometimes have during the night. I am sensitive to tingling because it can be a sign of getting the B vitamins wrong (peripheral neuropathy). Reading up on carnosine through beta alanine it can link to B5, but I am not sure that mammals can create B5 from carnosine.
I do think carnosine or beta alanine is worth taking, however.
Interestingly the tingling started (when it did) within about 9 minutes of taking the carnosine. I have taken carnosine for quite a while and it has not always caused tingling.
Nothing wrong with some good old-fashioned tingling every now and then, John.
Beta alanine paresthesia is annoying but you can prevent it by taking smaller doses more frequently rather than few larger doses
Its a very subtle tingle, but because i want to manage B vitamin supplementation I wish to avoid any false positives for peripheral neuropathy. If I touch anything the tingle is suppressed.
With large doses of beta alanine I get a prickly itch with smaller doses it could be an almost unnoticeable tingle but the beta alanine sensation is very different from the one from niacin (i actually enjoy the niacin flush unlike the beta alanine paraesthesia)
I think these things are a useful guide to what is going on. I do things to shift my metabolism in various directions and even weekly blood tests (which i did again today) wont pick up temporary shifts.
From a larger dose, how long does it take the itch to subside?
I take 5g of beta-alanine usually before a workout and it subsides within 20-30 min max.
I also take 1g of Niacin most days and I actually also have come to like niacin flush too
If your smoothie contains AKG, youāre probably sipping it over a period of time anyway, rather than glugging it down all at once. Depending on sipping speed, that might be enough to avoid the ātingleā.
I also take it from time to time.
Received my bulk beta-aniline powder yesterday.
Today I added 4 grams to ~11 oz of black coffee. This I sipped over the course of ~30 minutes.
I experienced only a mild tingling, nothing too unpleasant at all. I think I will try 5 grams daily for a while. Most people are taking it for muscle enhancement. I am taking it also for its reputed cognitive effects in older adults.
30-90 mins or something like that
I got the tingling starting from carnosine in about 10 minutes and it lasted about 30 minutes max. However, initially that was not the case. I wonder if the tingling starts when the bodies levels of beta-alanine exceed a certain threshold and it takes some time to build that up.
I do, however, have another source of tingling, but it does not happen the same way. This may be allicin which acts as an HS donor. I take a form which is supposed to get a good level of allicin from garlic. That can cause tingling as well.
I am currently trying to stop all the tingling from whatever source so I can build it up again understanding the metabolic impact. β-Alanine must have quite an impact on some metabolic pathways. I have also bought some β-Alanine which I will probably use to replace carnosine or alternate with it.
Thatās an exciting claim! āCarnosine reverses senescent cellsā. It seems like this idea goes back to 1994 with this publication: Retardation of the senescence of cultured human diploid fibroblasts by carnosine - PubMed
From the abstract (all that is not behind a paywall) āretards senescence and rejuvenates senescent cultures.ā
I think aging and probably cancer would be cured by now if not for scientific reaserach paywalls.
