Tyrosine May Shorten Lifespans

Popular Brain Supplement May Have a Deadly Downside for Men

Lowering tyrosine concentrations in people with elevated levels could contribute to increased longevity, potentially with sex-specific effects.

That’s too bad. I like L-tyrosine, especially when paired with Mucuna pruriens for an occasional morning boost.

I have taken a lot of L-tyrosine in my life, starting at the time it was suggested in Durk Pearson and Sandy Shaw’s book “Life Extension” in 1982.

I guess I will have to rethink taking L-tyrosine, though if it is damaging, the damage has already been done.

Forgive my minor rant, @DeStrider – it’s not particularly this; I could respond to almost any similar post the same way:

What is the dose??? I can’t think of any compound in my stack that at too high a dose wouldn’t do me harm, but at an appropriate dose may (I think will or it wouldn’t be in my stack) have benefit. How deep do I have to dig into a given research paper to find out if the particular dose for this particular finding is even within orders of magnitude of what I take? Where is the dose?

The dose makes the medicine. The dose makes the poison. Wish the articles would put that information front and center. And don’t get me started on form or brand or purity…

Sorry to hijack the thread. (Especially since it doesn’t directly apply to me, but I manage supplements for men now and then, and so it matters to me as well.)

Unfortunately, I can’t readily find the dosage information. It looks like it may be tyrosine levels from the normal UK diet which would mean that taking additional tyrosine would most probably be detrimental.

Interesting find.
I shall counter this in a way, and say tyrosine possibly saved my life today… or saved me a lot of $.
I did 2.5g tyrosine in morning, and 2.5g mid-day afternoon.
When I was driving my car this morning (after first dose), there was a driver going the opposite way in a large roundabout.
I was very alert, and able to avoid them hitting me. I was honking the horn & slowed down to alert others. Thankfully no one was hit.

Interesting that the article says "Phenylalanine showed no association with lifespan in either men or women after controlling for tyrosine,”.
I wonder if having a high bcaa protein diet (meat, dairy, protein powders etc) that it might cancel out tyrosine’s effects, or perhaps adding other non essential amino acids such as taurine, glycine, or collagen powder etc would also help.

The balancing act. I do push things too far into stress/catecholamines, and notice more grey hairs.
I’ll try to cut back on tyrosine, and other catecholamines products
If anyone has any ideas to slow down hair from going grey, please share
