Loss of appetite with Rapamycin?

Maybe time to trying some new things- any one here like to discuss healthy eating plans and such for over all health wellness and anti aging ?

AnUser my concern was this may be a side effect

Eating healthy is useful for losing weight, not gaining weight. It’s a misnomer since if someone’s underweight - simply eating more will make them healthier, regardless if it’s ā€˜unhealthy’ or not. At around 22 BMI there’s plenty of room for experimentation of healthier food and maintaining weight with such a diet.

also - how do you think this med is very psychological in what terms do you mean?

well I would like to gain healthy muscle and weight not fat necessarily plus I would like to feel good in the process does that make sense ?

I meant as a placebo effect or nocebo effect. But comparing with placebo, there is a difference in weight when using a mTOR inhibitor. Everolimus is very similar to rapamycin.

Actually, it’s not psychological, and it is a side effect, especially in women with a larger weight decrease than in men on average, based on something I just found:

After 9 months, women and men had lost 2.6 ± 3.8 and 0.8 ± 1.5 kg (P < 0.05) in body weight, respectively, and after 21 months, they had lost 4.1 ± 6.6 and 1.0 ± 3.3 kg (P < 0.05), respectively. On everolimus, caloric intake was significantly lower in women versus men (1510 ± 128 vs. 2264 ± 216 kcal/day, P < 0.05), caused mainly by a lower fat and protein intake in women versus men.

Im new to this whole thing so I am learning and this is all great information for me. So it IS a side effect at least since this drug is similar to Rapa.

Ok so you and I are about the same weight- may I ask your age ? You are eating more yet not gaining ? I feel like Im not hungry and its harder to eat. So you are eating more and still went back down to 95 pounds? This concerns me- what do your meals look like ? I would love to discuss this with you further since we seem to be the same in terms of weight size and issues

Yes it is a side effect, it was compared to placebo.

you are amazing yes so Im not imagining this one… hummmm

I have experienced the same thing. I’ve lost 3 lbs since starting Sirolimus without changing diet/exercise and most of it is fat from thigh, hip/flank and abdomen. Interestingly, fat loss of the face has not occurred. I’m at IBW so not looking to loose wgt. Age 55. I’m working on bringing up calories to stabilize wgt. I found some other studies that may hold interest. :

5. https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/jcsm.13352

Looking at other folks experiences published online plus numerous studies, seems there is a decreased hunger drive, known fat loss, early satiety response, normalization of serum leptin (though this may be due to the wgt. loss it promoted- chicken vs egg discussion), #5 is finally a recent human study and interesting that wgt. loss was noted in women. There is more but this is a start and an interesting conversation. I don’t think it’s psychological but that doesn’t mean we don’t have to have a plan to avoid risks of sarcopenia or cachexia if we want to continue Rapa tx.

Welcome to the forum.
Yes I’d say rapamycin causes weight loss, especially in women.

Hi Lisa… you asked: So you are able to eat a lot and have an appetite however no change in your weight on rapa?

Exactly, I am able to eat high carb, McDonald’s full breakfast, lunch Quarter Pounders with cheese… fries, , snacks, dinner… more snacks before bed… ice cream Sundaes and the weight doesn’t move. When I travel it is worse… huge European breakfast and restaurant lunches and dinners… eat…eat…eat for a week straight.

Because there is no weight gain consequences, I am eating whenever there is food
… at work… at inlaws… at home. Definitely is due to Rapamycin. I am actually concerned if I don’t eat constantly…I might start losing muscles and strength. Pretty shredded right now with no extra padding. I will do a full Dexa and 3-D Coronary Calcium Scan this summer. See what fat, bone density and plaque build up is like in me.

For now… it seems to be working. Also I am on TRT, so that probably helps in conjunction to keep weight off. Muscles use more calories :muscle:.

I just started the protocol 3 weeks ago and one thing I noticed besides mouth sores is that I have no appetite so I guess its too early to say I just know Im having trouble eating

Exercise (calorie expenditure) is the other side of the equation you haven’t mentioned.
If you want to put on muscle mass, you must do weight training.
If you do a lot of cardio, really cut right back on that and then you will put some weight on and if you do weight training, the weight you put on will be in lean muscle.

You also mention mouth sores. I can imagine this puts you off eating.

I’d stop the Rapamycin for now. Start doing bit of weight training - gradually build it up - and if you are lucky that might make you feel hungry.
Once the mouth sores have gone, wait another couple of weeks and then build up very slowly starting at 1mg a fortnight.

Thankfully the sores have cleared up - they lasted a few days and then psssed

I am hopeful the appetite thing passes too !

I’m 54. I eat about everything now. When I first started rapa I had horrible gut issues but for the last 6 months I’ve been able to tolerate many foods I hadn’t eaten in over 4 years. You would think I’d be gaining!!! I have to eat gluten free due to celiac which puts a damper on spontaneous eating but I do have other grains, fruits, vegetables and both plant and animal protein. I think the key for me is probably getting enough fat which is tricky because I’m trying to keep my cholesterol/lipids in range. Right now I’m increasing both carbs and fat while keeping protein adequate and increasing overall calories of course. I’m adding olive oil right now to see if it helps without impacting my lipids
too much. That might not be a concern for you though. I also try to eat four times per day and have snacks. I’m probably going to have to make my meals larger though because I weighed 94 this morning! With all that said I feel really good and it makes me wonder about the validity of the bmi scale.
