Elon Musk says humans are ‘pre-programmed to die’ and longevity is ‘solvable’, raising huge questions about the future of health

For those that did not see this…

As he has the resources required.

Interesting, I wonder what prompted this stance change. Perhaps Peter has softened him up to the idea?

If we can get him to fund things like RMR and the E5 studies that will be incredible.

You do not think he funds his own private projects with his family office?

Like many other in the 3028 Club.

And they keep it private.

This is a big 180 from his recent statements.

Basically things to the effect of “death is good, better to have as many offspring as possible (with multiple women if necessary)”

i can only speculate

If we want a colony on Mars (and I think that is a good idea) then we need to understand the aging process.

I am not a fan of Musk on the political front although I think he has been good on many scientific and engineering issues.

I think he is right that longevity is solvable, but also I think I have made some progress on the issue.

A cat can live up to 15 years, while a human can live up to 100 years; both are born, develop, and die. The difference is caused by a program encoded in their DNA. So, understanding this shouldn’t be too difficult.

Correct, only require$ re$ource$

We only decoded our dna 20 years ago.

The tough part is editing a human’s dna safely to extend lifespan…

Hasnt been done before

There are signs we can do it today

I must admit that when you consider the complexity induced by splicing factors it is quite hard to work from DNA to outcomes.

Compared to what he could be doing, he’s not doing that much at all. He started out great, but now he’s pretty much lost. What a waste.

Very few people know what he is doing.

In my view most likely the majority all private.

Very little get to the public view, the public companies and the well know private ones, some. What is know is a fraction of what is real.

I appreciate your optimism. But based on his behavior I don’t think he’s doing anything significant “in private”. There are no hidden laboratories/studies/etc that are advancing humanity IMO. He’s a lost cause. Let’s hope this post ages like sour milk! :crossed_fingers:

Differences in lifespan between species don’t imply programmed aging; they can arise from differences in organism structure, damage accumulation, and maintenance pathways.

Aging is, however, dependent in part on DNA. Arguably DNA is a program for protein production.

Musk commented on aging again quite recently and said the following:

  • It’s a solvable problem and when we figure it out, it will be “quite obvious”
  • There are benefits to death (and there are risks to ways of thinking being “locked in place” without death)
  • It is highly likely that we will figure out ways to extend life and reverse aging

I think it is quite obvious, but not everyone agrees with me

I think we are closer to curing HIV (and by extension all viral infections like herpes, covid etc.) than we are to curing aging. For curing persistent viral infections, you need a combination of a vaccine that induces multiple broadly-neutralizing antibodies and something to potently activate hidden viral reservoirs all across the body. How do we go about curing aging? Addressing ASCVD, diabetes and AD isn’t enough. Having powerful treatments for cancer or methods to suppress cancer formation to begin with isn’t enough. Overcome the hayflick limit isn’t enough. Your weakest link eventually gives and that’ll be it.

Because if your proposal was the cure for aging, you’d post undeniable proof with before-and-after pictures. No need for any kind of life extension studies when someone obviously ages backwards and isn’t just gaining muscle on TRT. Kind of like the top upvoted posts on reddit’s tressless subreddit where someone on dutasteride and oral/topical minoxidil went from a Norwood scale 6 to a solid 2.

Personally i think reversing cataracts is proof of the geroscience hypothesis. However, that is only visible to my optician.

There are three problems
One is that it is a slow process. The second is that i am doing a lot of experimentation around different combinations rather than going all out for results. The third is people are very sensitive to hair issues. I am reversing AGA in a way which is obvious to people who know me, but restarting dead follicles is very difficult and slow.

I can provide some interesting hair photos, but there are some more general photos here
