Depression and mental health: what do you use?

Not yet.
I only tried CBT for Anxiety.
Last week I met a therapist for my BPD, I have lots of problem, like socialization difficulties.
I am really exhausted at doing all these alone.

I once considered Keto diet, but never put this into practise. I had almost no knowledge about Keto .
I will consult with my therapist and physician first. Thank you for your advice.

Do you use breathing exercises? (Sometimes called meditation)

So sorry you are struggling. Cyber hugs being sent your way.

I don’t know much about Keto either, but I do know certain diets can impact many people in positive ways.

In thinking about an easy way to do it that is also healthy (ie no risk of messing it up, and at the very least is health promoting), a 5 day FMD might be worth a try? Prolon is the brand name and they provide the food so there is no thinking.

@desertshores, does this seem like a good short term no downside plan for RTHR to try just to dip toes in the water?

And @sallyjane mentioned LDN… I started taking it a few months ago for longevity, but when I joined the facebook group to learn more about it, I was pleasantly surprised to see how many people it helps for all sorts of things. You might want to join that group and see if anyone shares your story. It doesn’t help everyone but it performs miracles for others.

Have you tried other medications for BPD? SSRIs can help with anxiety and depression aspect, but there are others that can help in different ways. Antipsychotics (eg aripiprazole) or mood stabilizers (prescription dosed lithium, valproate) can help with irritability, mood swings, among other issues. Almost all psychiatric conditions respond best with a combination of therapy and medications.

Mr Google says:
To find a Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) therapist, you can use online directories like the DBT-Linehan Board of Certification (DBT-LBC), MentalHealth.com, Psychology Today, or GoodTherapy. You can also search Google for “DBT therapist” along with your zip code or city, or ask your current mental health provider for a referral.

Good Luck!

Seems to in fact be kind of miraculous for me in terms of mental health. I tried it a long time ago and didn’t notice much, but this time around, have been taking for maybe a month or so now , and it seems pretty significant .

I’ve found two supplements that greatly improve my mood - lithium orotate and NAC. I take them both daily (along with Glycine for the GSH glutathione boost).

Remember that SGLT2Is reduce your serum lithium greatly (70% I believe). That’s why I take 10 mg daily (3 mg effective).

My brain is weird. It worries about the future too much and exaggerates. I end up planning for the worst, which never comes. Although I am very well prepared for whatever does come.

I found eating keto exceptionally nice for mood stability. There’s an abundance of anecdotal stories online of people claiming keto helps with various mental issues but I honestly don’t know if there’s any science to back their claims. My diagnosis is PTSD fwiw and I know next to nothing about mental health/illness issues so this is just my personal experience. I find the diet helpful but wouldn’t solely rely on it to solve everything.
I ended up getting off keto gradually over the last 2 years because it trashed my lipids. I’ve considered doing it again with less animal and saturated fat while taking a lipid lowering med just to get back the brain/mental wellbeing I experienced from it.
Rucking, as someone already mentioned, helps me a lot mentally (and physically). Just being physically active doing something might be sufficient though. I love the combination of challenging my body while being in nature and find it to be particularly meditative and stress reducing. I personally believe in not neglecting the spiritual component of life but that’s not a subject for this forum. Nonetheless it’s been an important part of living my best life.
I also find it helpful to recognize when my thoughts aren’t necessarily true or when I’m getting caught up in catastrophic thinking patterns. My situation might not be comparable to yours as I don’t really understand the differences in the various mental illness diagnoses.

It sounds like you did it right. For the longest time I couldn’t figure out why I wasn’t getting the ketones. It turns out you can’t use too much protein. Gotta use lots of fat, including sat fat. Protein just gets converted into carbs.

I still avoid unnecessary carbs and take exogenous ketones. It’s probably a good idea to do the all fat thing for a while sometimes just to get your body burning fat again. I don’t understand it but it really worked to lose weight for me and I felt great. But my lipids are so bad anyway I hate to poke the bear.

Yep, those pesky lipids. I was one who had high ketones regardless of my protein intake and lost weight as well. During my final year of keto eating I was noticing a trend of visceral fat gain which was probably partially related to menopause but I just couldn’t let that continue. Perhaps I was also just eating too much? I eat about 500 more calories now and I’m maintaining a weight 5 pounds below my weight when I stopped keto. I truly felt at the time that I had to choose between my mind and body. If I try it again I guess I’ll see how it goes with fatty fish, nuts/seeds and fibrous low carb veggies.

Have you heard about classical psychedelics? It’s not something I would recommend, but there’s interesting research when used in a therapeutic setting. I could even find a clinical trial recruiting for its use in BPD + MDD: CLINICAL TRIAL / NCT05399498 - UChicago Medicine

5-HT1AR vs. 5-HT2AR Signaling

SSRIs modulate 5-HT1AR signaling, whereas psychedelics modulate 5-HT2AR signaling.2 The receptor subtype that has been associated most greatly with the antidepressant effects of SSRIs so far is the 5-HT1AR.3 Some antidepressants (e.g., trazodone) even downregulate 5-HT2AR signaling.3 It is important to note that common antipsychotics blockade the 5-HT2AR functioning in order to mitigate symptoms of psychosis.

On the other hand, psychedelics, also known for their antidepressant effects, possess agonist properties at the 5-HT2AR subtype. This receptor subtype is known to be the trigger of the psychedelic experience. In fact, the blockade of the 5-HT2AR receptor diminishes the subjective effects of LSD: experience of unity, blissfulness, and overall positive therapeutic effects, as confirmed by ketanserin studies.4

Despite their differing roles, 5-HT1AR and 5HT2AR signaling are both crucial in the maintenance of healthy brain functioning.

Active vs. Passive Coping

5-HT1AR signaling offers basal control, moderating emotion and anxiety; 5-HT2AR signaling engages more during times of crisis.2 5-HT1A and 2AR signaling are endogenous pathways that drugs like antidepressants and psychedelics can stimulate. Researchers employ the terms “passive” vs. “active” coping to these two serotonin signaling pathways.2,5

The dual model suggests that under passive coping one tolerates but does not “deal with” a source of psychological distress whereas during active coping one actively deals with psychological distress and can even change their relationship to it.2

I planned to see a psychiatrist next month, I am booking for appointment this week.
For now I know there is no approved drug for BPD, but I will ask psychiatrist if I can try more choices.

Thank you for the idea of Keto.
I learnt a lot about keto diet these days, I think I will try this method in a progressive pace.
Because I had liver injury at the beginning of this year, doctor tell me to follow a low fat diet (<20% calorie) for a few month until liver’s fully recover, I will increase fat intake slowly under more frequent monitors.

And any of you I forget to at, Thank you~

[EDITED FOR CLARITY]

I’ve only just read this post. I hope you are now in a better place.

I notice no-one has mentioned 5HTP. It enhances serotonin production. I find it a good sleep/mood enhancer. I take 1-2 50 mg tablets {on occasion], (not all the time as you develop a tolerance). [Edited].

You need B6 as well.

I found that 4 tabs [of 5 HTP] gave me a mood high, quite euphoric. Obviously everyone is different so you need to experiment with dosage but it seems safe and w/o many side effects.

It helped me get over my grief/depression after a family death, without taking any conventional anti-depressants.

Good article, thank you for posting it. Explain a lot. Bottom line: Psychedelics create a more malleable mental state, opening a “window” for deep psychological change - but only if guided properly.

Please keep us updated and I hope your appointment next week goes well.

I want to chime in that we really don’t know if Keto will help you, so if you have a liver injury, I’m just going on record as saying don’t mess with adding fat to your diet.

That amount would result in Megavitamin-B6 syndrome or B6 toxicity:

Primarily affecting the nervous system, this syndrome manifests through symptoms such as peripheral sensory neuropathy, characterized by numbness, tingling, and burning sensations in the limbs

I used to read about this many years ago so the field has probably advanced much further, I’d take a look at what Robin Carhart-Harris have presented more recently if you are interested in the latest info on the topic.

This is way below the safe upper limit. Many people can get by with 500mg/day for years. The neuropathy is caused by vitamers, or bad chemistry in the manufacturing process. P5P is a much safer form of B6 and you can take much higher equivalent amounts. It’s made better.

I’m not saying it works to take a megadose. I don’t take a megadose. Just that’s a pretty safe dose for most everybody.
