My dog is about 15 years old. Around 1.5 weeks ago, an ultrasound revealed that a cyst on his kidneys, which has been there for years, has grown into an abscess. Tests show that the infection hasn’t spread to his whole body. He’s on antibiotics, and after 5 days, the abscess reduced by about 20%. With another check-up in 1.5 weeks, I’m unsure if I should give him Rapamycin now or wait until after antibiotics. I plan to give 1mg weekly (dog weighs 8.3 kg) but worry it may affect the antibiotic treatment.
I think wait until the infection has cleared
IMO it’s a very high dose for a small dog like yours.
It seems that this is below the dosing RAPA recommendation from the DOG Aging Project, which is currently at 0.15 mg per kg of the dog’s body weight. In my case, that’s less than their suggested dosage.
I’m hesitating because I’m unsure if it will help or potentially harm. I’ve read about the positive effects on polycystic kidney disease and its benefits for kidney health overall.
The reason I would hesitate is that Rapamycin is an immune system suppressant. It may help in the long term, but in the short term it makes infections harder to clear by reducing the number of white blood cells.
Thank you for clarify
Yeah i would absolutely avoid the rapamycin during an acute infection.
What is the rush to give Rapamycin? Wait until the infection is gone.
I thought I would additionally support the body due to autophagy.
I got Covid and waited about a month before resumption. What’s the rush?
Rapamycin is an antibiotic anti fungal. Not a very good one but still … Anyway, I would wait the end of the prescribed course of antibiotics. Especially when you know that the prescribed treatment is working.Taking rapamycin is not an emergency.
Were you giving him rapa before the infection to increase longevity?
I’m tempted to do that with my 12 year old dog.
No, I haven’t given it yet. We’re waiting for the ultrasound tomorrow to see how things look, and hopefully, we’ll decide what to do next. We haven’t administered Rapamycin to any of our animals yet. We have three dogs and three cats, most of them are elderly. We’ve managed to get Rapamune (by Pfizer) here in Poland, but only 30 tablets for now. We’re waiting for the main order from India before starting them on it. My husband and I started taking Rapamycin last week, and today is our second dose.
