I have had a tendency to set the thermostat at 16c. Talking to one of my children earlier today about the thermostat setting they pointed me to a media story which argued that 16c was dangerous.
I have tried to trace the evidence for this and found a paywalled paper:
and something reporting the WHO guidelines
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK
The sleep foundation, however, say:
- The ideal temperature for sleep is between 65-68°F.
The temperature of your bedroom can make a significant difference to your sleep quality. The best room temperature for sleep is approximately 65 degrees Fahrenheit (18.3 degrees Celsius). This may vary by a few degrees from person to person, but most doctors recommend keeping the thermostat set between 65 to 68 degrees Fahrenheit (15.6 to 20 degrees Celsius) for the most comfortable sleep.
15.6 correctly converts, however, to 60.08 Fahrenheit although 20 is 68
May give the source of the confusion above
The ideal room temperature for sleep is anywhere from 60°F to 65°F (15.6°C to 18.3°C.) However, everyone is different, and this temperature may not work for you. Infants and older adults may also need a slightly warmer room temperature.
Personally, however, I don’t mind if the air temperature is more like 10°C.
I have not, however, yet managed to find free to air actual research on this matter.
