Unlocking the Secrets of Sleep for Longevity (Martin Kowalski, MD PhD) Longevity Summit 2025

I first ran into Martin in the dinner buffet line and started talking with him. He’s an engaging young doctor out of Stanford who mentioned he’s doing sleep research. My first question for him, half-jokingly, was if he’s working on a startup company. This was said partly in jest because its not entirely clear to me that there was a need for any other sleep companies.

Of course, he replied that he was in fact working on a sleep startup company, and its actually very interesting and something I would like to use myself.

Martin has developed a sleep optimizing and modeling application that helps you get better sleep by helping you understand exactly what things might be impacting your sleep and by how much, and in precisely what manner. It even helps you understand how sex impacts your sleep, positive and negative (see the slide below titled “Baby, we’re doing this for science!”).

You might intuitively understand that having a drink of alcohol or two might impact your sleep if you take it at a certain time in the evening… but this app models in great detail the precise impact. And you can fiddle with dozens of variables that could be impacting your sleep and you can see exactly what is likely to be happening, and how to correct things.

Another part of the app (I think) is a jet-lag minimization engine. You tell it when and where you’re flying and it will provide a rigorous science-backed schedule for eating, nutrition, sleep, etc. for the days prior, the day of, and the days after, travel to minimize jet lag and speed recovery time.

Personally, I think the entire app looks pretty useful and interesting. I also think it would be a great help in educating kids on how to improve their sleep, and get them to lower their phone usage.
