Nicholas Flanders began thinking deeply about his sleep a few years ago when Twelve, the carbon-transformation company he’d co-founded in the Bay Area, was in the midst of funding rounds. “The stress…was having an impact on my sleep,” he said. He sought out fixes.

Today, Flanders, who’s in his 30s, has an impressive “sleep stack”—the term for the set of tools and tech that obsessives use to optimize sleep. His mattress cover changes temperature throughout the night. His Oura Ring 4 tracks sleep stages. An eye mask collection seals out light. Mouth tape might aid with oxygen intake. And a red-light lamp may support melatonin production. Since using these, he said, he feels generally more rested and less “groggy,” needing fewer coffees.

Flanders is among a new breed of entrepreneurs and business leaders that not only views sleep as crucial to performing at work, but equips itself accordingly. We asked a handful of them to reveal their sleep stacks and other tips.
