The Hardest Part of Longevity: What’s Your Fasting Routine?

Interesting, because for me is totally opposite, by day three I become so full of energy that I literally can’t sit down, I have to move or do something (and this coming from a normally lazy person LOL). I did the most five days but by 5th day I was up no sleep for 21 of 24 hours fully awake and plenty of energy but I had to stop. The energy level though is as if I’m possessed or something, unreal. Loved the feeling, absolutely no aches and pains anywhere, I could jump from the chair or couch as if I’d be seating on springs LOL.

Now, I just practice once a day eating (most days) after work from 5-7pm. Sometimes I eat lunch also, but I can’t have three meals, or I’d be so bloated and tired that I’d barely be able to finish any tasks.

I tend to think that for people who are fit and exercise regularly fasting might not do much, but for lazy and overweight probably it is the best intervention health wise if they did a 3–5 day fast couple times a year.

A few years ago, I did 19 cycles of 5 consecutive days of water fasting out of every 14 days. Intentionally weight stable when comparing day1 of each cycle. At one point, I did 5 years of OMAD. I’ve done 16:8 or better for years. Recently did a DIY version of FMD for 5 days (mimcked Longo’s patent info to design the DIY), Been studying the Russian/Soviet dry fasting clinics and may try a 7 day of that version. I’m 70, 13-14% fat, BMI around 23.5%. Been keto adapted since 2009, though eat around 200 g carbs/day & still maintain that.

I’d be interested to know how you find the oral semaglutide? What dose are you on? I am also using it but struggling to get above 3 mg due to nausea and headaches…

What’s your BMI, if you don’t mind me asking? Just curious—are you taking it for weight loss, or strictly for the anti-aging benefits?

I actually just came across a paper with experimental data that explains this phenomenon. If you strictly fast, there’s a single spike in adrenaline around day 3 or 4.

Dear God, no! I find it difficult to imagine anything much worse than that!!

My wife said I’m not allowed to do fasting any more because I was such a useless POS by day 3. Couldn’t help with the kids or anything.

I do wonder what that says about each of our underlying physiology though.

It is an interesting question. I am told I get a bit stroppy when fasting although that may be simply my response to being offered food. I don’t personally think the response “I’m fasting” is rude, but it may be slightly abrupt.

I find it quite easy not eating for a day, but I am not sure I would want to go for more than 1 day. I have done some time in the past, but I don’t want to start eating into protein reserves. I am careful to break the fast quite early in the day with some protein. The fasts end up as being about 36 hours.

That’s the whole point of fasting. The fact that it doesn’t have a reserve of amino acids is a good thing IMO. That’s the reason that during fasting the body is forced to break down tissues to get a supply of amino acids and that’s largely a good thing because that’s what forces it to activate autophagy in various organs.
