It’s about time! This is a small study in companion dogs that tested a weight-based dose of dapagliflozin (0.45 to 1 mg/kg/day) for about a week, demonstrating increased urinary glucose and no toxicity.
I posted a study in cats for dapa, excellent results. Of course duration is ridiculous, but we’ll take what we can get. FWIW, one of my cats has been on dapa for almost a year, and based on his bloodwork his kidney disease has been arrested with no obvious sides. Possibly even slightly reversed (protein in urine went from 2 before dapa to 1). Preliminarily it seems like SGLT2i might be as much of a miracle drug class in dogs and cats as in humans. Btw., a couple of SGLT2i drugs have been cleared by the FDA for diabetes in cats, so toxicity should not be as much of a concern (in cats).
@CronosTempi my 3rd cat has now been diagnosed with CKD (ugh) and he’s not one I can give subq fluids too ![]()
So, on that note… we discussed my vet didn’t like the idea of dapa for my other CKD cats because of increased urine output, potential for UTI’s and decreased weight… but I’m thinking about this for him because we don’t have the most effective treatment available to us for him (giving him fluids).
If I recall, you reduced the dose due to one of those effects? Can you give me an update on what you are seeing incase it’s helpful for me over here.
What dose are you giving?
Yes, I was aware of the use in cats but this is the first one I’ve seen in dogs. Some drugs/supplements are safe in dogs but toxic in cats (and vice-versa), so I’m happy to see a canine dapagliflozin study.
Beth, I was giving my 12lbs white cat that has squamous cell carcinoma and is on rapamycin, 5mg dapagliflozin daily. His weight kept going down. When he dipped below 10lbs, I cut the dosing to 5mg three times a week (Saturday, Monday, Wednesday). He went back up to about 10.25lbs and stabilized there. He’s been on the new dose about 5 months now, and according to his bloodwork is doing well. No UTIs. Still drinking quite a bit, but that’s been true for the past 2-3 years anyhow (also will only eat dry food, whole life, sigh). His blood kidney numbers are OK (in fact improved to go back to within range) still protein in urine, but cut from 2 to 1.
Thank you @CronosTempi. for clarity, the 12 yo who was losing weight does NOT have CKD, correct?
The other one you mentioned in two posts ago saw a reversal, or at least a halt, in its CKD, correct? Same dosing ?
