Scientists discover the brain has a fast lane and slow lane for clearing waste

Very interesting as it strengthens the emerging view that brain waste clearance is an important component of healthy brain ageing. It also gives researchers a potential way to test interventions rather than simply assuming they improve glymphatic function.

I noticed that these researchers are now establishing normal flow patterns in mice and hope eventually to compare:

  • young vs. older brains
  • healthy vs. Alzheimer’s brains
  • normal vs. concussed brains (I have friends who have suffered serious concussions in sport).

It could eventually allow studies asking whether things such as; deep/slow-wave sleep, exercise, blood-pressure control, metabolic health or particular longevity interventions actually improve brain clearance.
