Yes, there are studies showing that it is beneficial not only for macular degeneration, but also for all photoreceptors in the retina. For example, it may be useful in cases such as retinal detachment and glaucoma.
Thanks Nikney…these latest studies are very encouraging and I hope to stop my macular degeneration before it gets much worse. I’ve had the 1 mg Rapa for quite awhile now and have hesitated using it. Actually it is the Siraboon that doesn’t get much recommendation here by the admins but I hope to titrate up to 4-5 mg quickly if no side effects.
Can you elaborate? I actually had a retinal detachment while taking rapamycin.
Davin8r … you might want to google the latest studies, one in 2021 and then the latest coming out of China in 2022. Sorry about your retinal detachment but are thinking that the rapa caused it? that would be bizarre. I would research that if I were you.
I don’t know of a mechanism of how rapa could have caused retinal detachment, and I would think we would have heard of it by now if it could. I have very high myopia in both eyes, which is a huge risk factor for RD. I did do literature searches at the time (2022) and couldn’t find anything on rapamycin + retinal detachment. Just now (with the help of AI) I found a study in rats from 2019:
So, maybe of use for treatment, although it’s a long way from rats to humans, and I was really scared the rapamycin in my system would inhibit proper healing from the surgery, but all seems to have gone about as well as can be expected. For all I know, things could have been a lot worse if I HADN’T been taking rapamycin.
I’d really like to restart rapa, but with the PTSD from the first RD and the fact I have a 10% chance of RD in my OTHER eye, I’ve been irrationally afraid. Might be time to “suck it up” and get back to it.
There was a recent study showing blueberries are beneficial for AMD.
On my way home from work, I buy 3 boxes of blueberries for the family dessert. My eyes are working fine although reading glasses help with the fine print!
Also, Lutein and Zeaxanthin are great supplements for eye health (thanks @RapAdmin for the suggestion way back when…)
