Puzzler No.1 - Inulin going rock hard

I have a few small issues which it would be good to source the group’s wisdom with.

I have some inulin (Chicory) which has gone rock hard. This is the second time this has happened: I had to discard the previous batch as it was unusable - it even resists a chisel to get some off.

Of course I put Silica Gel sachets in with the inulin but that’s now somewhere in the rock.

With the previous batch I put it in the oven at a low heat to try to evaporate the water but that had little effect.

Anybody got any ideas how to make it usable again?

What you described didn’t happen to my batch, but after two week daily use it completely disrupted my GI balance. Stopped it and don’t want to try again.

Happened to me in one container, don’t know why, obviously somehow moisture got in, but why just that one batch, I don’t know. I’m very careful with moisture and temperature. I tossed it. Fortunately didn’t happen with my other batches.

I don’t know how to fix it once it has hardened (maybe try a cheese grater?), but one thing I have noticed about preventing it in the first place is to put it in a little round plastic container such as used to contain creatine powder – and to screw the lid on, use a little scooper like they also add to creatine containers, and then to keep it out of the freezer, on a table.

Every time I buy inulin from Bulk Supplements and put it in my freezer and then try to scoop some out, it starts to get sticky over time. But when I pour it out into a creatine container and keep it outside of the freezer and just lay it down on a table, I never have the problem. I think what’s happening is that when I move it out of the freezer into the room, it sucks moisture into the bag. By keeping it outside, this is less likely to happen; and the shape of the container (creatine container) may help, too.

Just put it into a plastic bag and bang it against a hard surface, or against your head :joy::joy:

I do that with my frozen sweet corn when it decides to get together and become rock hard in the fridge.
