I’m experimenting with metformin to keep my blood sugar in range. I seem to need about 1000mgs morning and evening to reduce blood sugar spikes over 7.8 mmol/l (140 mg/dl). For those of you using Metformin for blood sugar balance or anti-aging purposes, what blood sugar range are you aiming for? Thanks
Acarbose is what you need to blunt the glucose peaks from food.
Metformin reduce mostly the production of glucose from the liver.
My sincere recommendation would be to cut down carbohydrates and sugars to minimum. No reason to eat food raising BS then take metformin to put it down.
i got family diabetes history on my mother’s side, replaced rice, bread, noodles with protein (eggs mostly or chicken/fish meat), oliver oil and coconut oil years ago, of course sometimes i cannot resist them so let myself binged a little, but i always come back to low carbohydrate diet…
I’m taking 500 mg of Metformin daily and that has brought my HBA1C down from 5.7 to 5.4. I’d like to get to 5.0. I’ll be adding empagliflozin shortly to help. I also took Pendulum Akkermansia which helped too!
I believe there’s a cognitive disadvantage to taking more than 1 g of Metformin a day. So be careful.
Do you still take it? Or was it a one time treatment of a few months? What dose?
Yes. Akkermansia AND Metformin caused my HBA1C to go down from 5.7 to 5.4.
I decided to just keep taking Akkermansia to keep my HbA1c low. It knocked it down from 5.6 to 5.0. When I stopped taking it (to see if the bug had taken up residence) my HbA1c popped back up so I’ve decided to stay on it since it’s my biggest health risk (family history).
This is what I take. There are a few options. I may lower the dosage eventually but why skimp on something that works. I just cut back on the junk supplements that don’t seem to do anything.
I was not familiar with Accermansia, and especially its effect on kidneys health. This is what Microsoft Copilot offers:
Akkermansia muciniphila, often abbreviated as A. muciniphila, is a gram-negative gut microbe discovered within the human gut microbiome in 2004. Here are some key points about Akkermansia and its potential effects:
-
Gut Health: Akkermansia resides entirely within the mucus layer of the gut wall, directly interacting with intestinal cells. Its ability to populate both the small and large intestines suggests a role in maintaining a strong gut lining¹.
-
Metabolism and Weight Management: In animal models, Akkermansia stimulates the secretion of glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), which helps regulate appetite and may aid in weight management¹.
-
Kidney Autoimmunity: Recent research indicates that Akkermansia can strip the sugar coating from IgA antibodies, potentially influencing the development of IgA nephropathy, an autoimmune kidney disease².
-
Cholesterol Regulation: Akkermansia can reduce cholesterol synthesis genes when it consumes mucins, suggesting a beneficial relationship with humans⁵.
While promising, more research is needed to fully understand Akkermansia’s impact on kidney health. Always consult a healthcare professional for personalized advice.

Thank you. I tried CodeAge. It made no difference. Will try this.
I use glucose control by pendulum … it’s more expensive so perhaps I’m wasting my money?, but it has more akkermansia in it than their singular akkermansia product
I’m using metformin for my glucose spikes. It used to work fairly well before I was on rapa. Granted, I also needed to get rid of breads/rice/pasta.
I’ve also recently added berberine.
Before adding acarbose, a few days ago, my doc had me start taking 1000mg of metformin before bed, instead of splitting it throughout the day, as I was doing. It seems to make things better for some magical reason, but even with that and the other 2 products, it’s not enough.
My goal is to keep it below 140 most of the time, but since starting to wear a cgm over the last month, i haven’t had one day that I’ve been able to keep below 140, and many days it’s 170+
Fwiw, my a1c was 5 in march (before rapa)
Unfortunately I can’t even eat raw carrots without my blood sugar going over 140 and I’m sick of eating a keto diet with only green leaves. I maintained that strict diet for 19 years to keep me well from chronic fatigue and keep blood sugar spikes in check (falling off the diet and binging regularly) but need a healthier diet with more leeway for vegetables and occasional fruit. I’m experimenting with metformin and these last 2 weeks with acarbose, which may enable me to reduce my metformin dose.
Acarbose has proven to be significantly more effective in reducing glucose spikes. While I continue to take Metformin, adding 100 mg of Acarbose before meals has been a game changer for me.
You have my admiration to have 19 years of strict diet on veg, i am far behind your perseverance…
However, my two cents, i am drinking coconuts oil and extra virgin olive oil directly to counter the desire of my body to have carbohydrate as fuel, often mix them with curcumin powder. Time to time i feed myself oily fishes, like smoked sprat, tuna, salmon, etc. Eggs, liver, natural multivitamins to supplement the micro nutrition. They effectively keep my body fat around 15%.
I used to take a lot of metformin orally for it’s famous anti-aging effect. I also smashed it and rapamycin to mix them with DMSO as topical lotion for my facial skin and scalp. However, too much of metformin made me watery poop and had trouble controlling it. Now i take more Forxiga (SGLT2 inhibitor) shipping from India. Acarbose may also be a good candidate to replace metformin.
Thanks for this. I have been trying acarbose lately and found the acarbose much more effective than the metformin to reduce my blood sugar spikes. Just struggling with the gas which I’ve never had before - a bit embarrassing so hoping it will go away after a few weeks!
