Given the absence of human studies on inhaled melatonin,
They don’t know either. I supposed the existance of melatonin vapes means that human experimentation is happening. I wonder how stable the molecule is when in a vape, but one would assume it is not doing that much harm as we might already know if it was.
Yes it’s weird there are zero studies but dozens of websites with thousands of reviews. So millions of people using a product that has never been tested!
Some of the interest in vapes was generated in response to research about the potential protective effects of melatonin in the lungs against Covid. Sorry, I have not quite mastered uploading information, so bear with me.
Also, an excerpt from a medical news site:
“Because lung melatonin inhibits transcription of these genes that encode proteins for viral entry point cells, application of melatonin directly into the lungs in the form of drops or spray could block the virus. More research is required to prove that this is indeed the case, however, the researchers note.”
Furthermore, we found that prolonged blue light irradiation induced DNA damage, which in turn induced YAP–p73 nuclear translocation. These effects were also notably attenuated by melatonin.
From my experience, probably about the same. Sleep did seem to come on a little quicker. They might help people who wake up in the middle of the night who want to quickly get back to sleep fast (all speculation of course)
I have taken both. The vapes were poorly constructed, so they didn’t last long before they started to produce a harsh ‘smokey’ vapour. Still had melatonin tablets at the time, so I could compare one day to the next. N=1 and all that, and I only used the vape for a couple of weeks before I had to chuck it.
I have finally got my 250g of melatonin powder…only one thing I noticed, it is not really water soluble. How do you guys take 1g of melatonin? Straight into the mouth or is there a more practical way. Putting it in capsule is too troublesome. I can scoop about 1g in my teaspoon… how do you guys take it?
I’m sure other members, have better methods of ingesting it, but l add it to water and stir the crap out of it. I have to be very careful drinking it because l find it burns if it gets into places it shouldn’t.
@adriank
I took 1g on 3 separate nights to see if I felt any different by sleeping better or waking up particularly bright eyed and bushy tailed (Dr Loh said if you take enough you wake up energized). It was fine but I felt nothing unusual vs just taking a lower amount. I did notice my hrv was better on those nights.
I have incorporated John’s method of taking my melatonin if/when I wake up in the middle of the night. I take either my 10mg or 100mg pill. I don’t time it to my sleep cycle as John does only because I don’t know how , but it works perfectly for me nonetheless. I always fall back to sleep and then get really good sleep for a few hours. I has never not worked! It’s such a slam dunk that I can watch a YouTube on my ipad and know I will simply fall asleep at some point, so I don’t stress about being awake.
One thing I’ve noticed is that when I do take the higher dose, I’ll often get deep sleep again which I would normally only get at the beginning of the night. I should start taking notes on what I took and when so I can track it better for more helpful feedback.
I hadn’t heard the term non polar compound and have now googled and see the definition, but why is that needed for your melatonin ? Just curious
Polar compounds are like water… they have a particular orientation… because they are charged like a magnet. Non polar compounds are like oil because the hydrogen atoms surrounds them so they do not have preference for any order. So polar compounds mixes together and likewise non-polar compounds mixes with themselves but if you try to mix both together, they just dont. Try putting melatonin powder into water and it does not mix or dissolve.
I will try taking melatonin after I wake up. I will take 40mg to start my sleep and then take 500mg+ when I wake up again and just to see how I feel. I haven’t been sleeping well for a while.
Over the past several days I’ve begun to increase the amount of melatonin I take before bed.
I started at 100mg and have worked up to 600mg.
I didn’t notice any particular improvement until last night.
600g about 45 minutes before I put down my book and tucked in for the night around 12:30 AM.
I woke up at 6:30 AM and took 200g more.
I will typically wake up between 4:00 AM and 5:00 AM.
Fell back to sleep and slept until 9:22 AM.
Via my Oura ring (used since 2022) I had:
Sleep score: 84 highest 84 in years. My highest ever, 86.
Heart rate lowest: 51 bpm
Heart rate average 55 bpm (this after an HIT workout the day before).
HRV: 114 highest since 2022.
REM sleep: 1h 4m
Deep sleep: 43m
REM and deep sleep not particularly unusual, but everything else significantly better than I’ve experienced in a long time.
