I’m curious to know if anyone has tried Melatonin 3mg nightly for its anti-aging effects. This seems to be a remarkable and under appreciated substance that has many wonderous effects on health. Besides ingesting it it has shown promise as a skin treatment and also for oral health.
Curious to know the experience of this very atuned group.
I used 3mg nightly for better sleep for about 2 months, but it’s like after a while your body gets used to it. Since 2 months I have been using 10mg with succes
I use 1.5 - 3 mg once or twice a week. Now I’m using time release tablets, but this is the first time, I used to use normal or oral liquid. I do this because I have getting off to sleep issues. My reasoning is that mel production declines with age.
I alternate with valerian tablets/tea. I find if you take M on successive days it soon loses effect. I don’t know if it has any anti-aging effect. I don’t believe I’ve seen any major research.
I take 720mg of melatonin daily. 480mg just before bed, and the remain in 4 60mg doses throughout the daily. I do this mainly for its anti-cancer and anti-viral effects.
I first became aware of this from the following presentation:
After watching that I started taking 180mg of melatonin a day. About 9 months later I saw this presentation:
I then upped my dose and I am currently taking 780mg of melatonin a day. I have been doing this for about a year now.
According to Reiter, there is no maximum safe dose of melatonin. No amount of melatonin kills test animals (suffocation aside, I suppose). He says he take ~80mg per day at night, and adds more if he gets sick. Doris Loh advocates for much higher doses for COVID / Flu.
I’m trying to ramp up. I’m only at 10-20mg taken at night only, and usually only if I wake up around 1-3am, following @John_Hemming protocol on timing. I will take before bed if I’m not sleepy at my normal sleep time.
I am planning to experiment with taking during the day. At this point I don’t understand the impact of exercise adaptation so I’ve hesitated.
I looked up the Reiter book. It is dated 1993 and doesn’t seem to have been updated since then. The biochemistry may be first rate, but I am inclined to think that data and practice will have advanced since then.
I don’t know why 3mg was specifically mentioned as the dose in the original question, but I do believe melatonin is very important as we get older. I take 1mg sublingual, a little more than replacement level dosing (which is around 0.1-0.8mg). I’m still not completely sold on the massive dosages, but I reserve the right to change my mind at some point.
I think 3 mg is mentioned as it is the most popular and available type of tablet. I usually cut mine in half as I find 1.5 mg is enough for sleep and it is around the replacement level.
Again, I see no evidence for this. Wholesalers like Costco don’t even sell 3 mg, they typically sell 5-10 mg.
Melatonin is maybe helpful, I use it for sleep in formulation called Sleep #3 along with some herbs and l-theanine - seems to help.
I have seen dosing between 300 mcg to apparently 720 mg a day used ! That is over 2000 fold span. So unless there a DBPCS confirming some benefits at consistent dosing, I would refrain from making blanket statements regarding the dosing.
I vary my melatonin consumption each night because I am also using it to extend sleep as well as dosing to protect mtDNA from harm. These are my figures for the last couple of nights. (mg)
