Quick update. I need to cycle off . It loses effectiveness after a while. I had been doing M-f with weekends off. Gonna take a month off and try again.
Interesting. I force myself to skip several days each week to avoid this. No loss of effectiveness yet.
I have finally found a cost effective way to buy MB. Unfortunately my Fullscript site doesn’t carry it but I buy the powder to which I add distilled water (following @desertshores approach). It’s not cheap but it’s much better than buying solution.
Not for everyone, but I have been encapsulating certain supplements for quite some time. I use the one from Purebulk. Encapsulating the methylene blue is a little bit tricky because it is a very fine powder and stains everything it touches.
I found this from the Wizard Sciences, I thought this was good information to share.
I do wonder how Methylene Blue and Rapamycin work together? Thoughts?
Methylene Blue
Methylene Blue can be found in our:
Methylene blue is a blue dye developed back in the 1860’s by scientists who were working for the textile industry. They were dying cotton and wool blue. Being scientists, they started looking at it under the microscope and interestingly enough they found bacteria, viruses, and parasites! The methylene blue stain allowed them to see things more clearly under the microscope.
Another interesting thing that happened while looking at the stain was that they were able to identify a parasite that causes malaria and note that it was killed. The stain had killed the parasite! So actually, methylene blue was one of the first drugs and definitely the first antibiotic, developed in the late 1860’s. They also treated UTI’s (urinary tract infections) with Methylene Blue.
Since then, it’s mostly been replaced by other antibacterials and malaria medicines. In fact, hydroxychloroquine (which is used for many things including Covid-19, Malaria, Rheumatoid Arthritis, and Lupus) is actually derived from methylene blue.
Methylene blue is beneficial for virtually all types of chemical poisonings. It’s a great antiviral, especially when used with red light therapy. It improves breathing, which makes it VERY USEFUL FOR COVID.
Other uses:
- To help with energy (most common)
- To fight depression
- To help with Dementia
- To help prevent and treat UTI
- To help with pain (especially neuropathies)
How it Works
Methylene blue works by increasing mitochondrial respiration. We’re talking about cellular metabolism, which may be the cause of many diseases (along with inflammation).
Methylene blue has to do with the electron transport chain. It actually can donate or receive electrons. If you’ve studied chemistry, think about redox reactions. It’s one of the few things that can donate electrons or take them up when needed for mitochondrial dysfunction.
The mitochondria are those energy producing parts of each cell that produces ATP (i.e., energy) by a process called oxidative phosphorylation. Methylene blue inhibits NITRIC OXIDE.
A good 2021 review of methylene blue reported that it’s the only drug known to inhibit excessive production of reactive oxygen species (think cytokine storm). It’s a low cost dye with antiseptic properties and properties that are used to treat malaria, UTIs, septic shock, and methemoglobinemia.
Note: Methemoglobinemia is a condition where your hemoglobin (which contains iron) is contained in your red blood cells, becomes oxidized, and can’t transport the oxygen. Think carbon monoxide poisoning and cyanide poisoning. Methylene blue turns those patients around really quick because it converts methemoglobin to hemoglobin, and hemoglobin carries the oxygen to all of your tissues.
Contraindications and Dosing:
BEFORE TAKING METHYLENE BLUE …
If you’re on a SSRI (like Prozac or Zoloft) you probably want to wean off that first.
You probably don’t want to use it in pregnant or nursing patients, or babies.
You don’t want to use it if you have that rare G6PD deficiency that we check for if we’re using high dose IV Vitamin C.
Note: At normal doses of methylene blue you don’t need to check for G6PD, but if you’re going to use it for other things (like cancer) and use it in higher doses, you do want to check a G6PD test.
Methylene Blue also:
Decreases your estrogen if you are estrogen dominant.
Decreases prolactin.
Decreases cortisol.
Decreases nitric oxide (which we add back in)
Increases testosterone a bit.
Increases your dopamine and serotonin.
FYI
“Do not take trazodone with a ……, methylene blue, …. selegiline [Eldepryl®],…”
“Trazodone may cause a serious condition called serotonin syndrome if taken together with some medicines”
This and other trazodone side effects are dose-dependent.
Those in the forum taking trazodone in the 50-100mg dose range to reduce sleep onset time probably don’t have to worry.
The dosages that cause such things as serotonin syndrome are much higher than this.
N=1: I have taken trazodone 50-100mg/daily in the past along with methylene blue ~30 50mg. daily in the past for extended periods with nothing but positive effects.
"While trazodone increases serotonin levels, its risk for causing serotonin toxicity is generally considered low due to:
Weak serotonin reuptake inhibition compared to SSRIs ([4])
5-HT2A antagonism, which may mitigate some serotonergic effects
However, caution is still warranted, especially when combining with other serotonergic agents."
Has anyone noticed that MB is now available as a convenient bottle of capsules from Amazon? (12 mg per capsule)
This brand was posted by member DrFraser as the one he uses a few weeks ago.
I add MB to a few ounces of orange juice, stir and drink it through a straw. Taste is not bad. I don’t mind the blue tongue; it fades away after awhile.
This is the one I use, it is so messy otherwise. Yes there is some vitamin C with it, but I don’t see a huge reason for concern with that in regard to how it is packaged, primarily with cocoa.
I also found a tablet version without vitamin C, but it’s ridiculously expensive:
I’m happy with the one I’m using, I’ve got methylene blue powder and put it into jello – but still got tooth/tongue staining.
Additionally if you had the appropriate equipment, can certainly blend and thoroughly mix some methylene blue powder in with cocoa powder and sort out the math to get 10-12 mg per capsule.
The compounding pharmacies absolutely hate when they are willing to put this into capsules, they usually do so with the liquid. It completely messes up their lab and stains everything.
He did a very balanced review on it. Basically, that human studies on MB showed mixed results and risks are real.
Personally, I have used a very small dose intermittently when I’m tired (like when I take my rapamycin or sick) as it seems to give me nootropic boost.
Yea I’d say it was rather balanced.
I like to listen to people with personal experience who are using it too. There are so many people at this point who take it and I mostly hear positive things from them. Even if it doesn’t improve lifespan, the cognitive feeling people get from it could make it worth the price of admission if used responsibly.
I’ll probably try it at some point.
I use MB regularly. My thought process was to be confident it wouldn’t harm me. After all it is a synthetic dye invented in the 19th century.
That said, I started by listening and reading what I could find. Once I found an MD who recommended it to his patients (I interviewed Dr Scott Scher), I decided to try just a tiny dose.
From there I have gotten comfortable that I’m in no serious danger with the low doses I take a few days a week.
It is a mitochondrial booster. Feeling exhausted, MB. Feeling “something” coming on (virus), MB. Brain fog but too late for caffeine, MB. Feeling a bladder infection brewing, MB.
Thank you, dear Joseph, for the interview with Dr. Scott Scher. After listening to it, I gave it a try and experienced a very pronounced effect on brain fog - just like you. I can hardly recall any nootropic I’ve tried that had such a significant effect. SO, now I will observe effect / tune right dosage / make blood tests in a couple of weeks.
Awesome! It’s one of the only supplements that I feel anything plus it’s a wide ranging cure-all for me. It almost makes me believe in magic.
Others:
Melatonin
Niacin
Creatine - slight effect
Lithium orotate - slight effect
Rapamycin
