With “avoiding inflammaging” near the top of most of our to do lists, i thought this might be worth highlighting.
Prof Janet Lord has done a lot of research in the area and comes to some interesting conclusions
In summary:
Getting a balance of anti vs pro inflammatory cytokines is the key
Muscles, when used, produce anti-inflammatory cytokines.
So muscle mass + muscle use => reduced chronic inflammation
In practical terms her research found that 6-7k steps cuts inflammation in half (compared to 3k steps) But to eliminate inflammation completely the number of daily steps for eliminating chronic inflammation was (coincidentally)… about 10,000 steps.
His her basic formula.
Resistance training to build muscle mass + 10,000 steps + no prolonged periods of inactivity = no chronic inflammation.
Take home: Diet, sleep, low alcohol, no smoking, fasting, avoiding over exercising etc all also contribute but muscle-produced anti-inflammatory cytokines are key.
