I don’t take this seriously, as its from the Daily Mail… but Raghav Seghal is a good researcher out of Morgan Levine’s lab at Yale.
Can we really turn back our body’s clock? Dr Raghav Sehgal, a researcher in ageing at Yale University, says that some studies have shown it’s possible to reduce certain aspects of biological age by one to three years through better sleep, diet and exercise. However, he’s sceptical about the more outlandish claims of age reversal, as the testing methods may not take in the full complexity of the damage caused by decades of unhealthy living.
Dr Sehgal, 30, does believe that one day, some experimental therapies, such as replacing blood plasma with infusions from younger people, or drugs that reprogramme our cells to a younger state, could allow people to reverse their age by a decade. Despite there being little hard evidence for the benefits of such techniques in humans right now, some animal studies are promising.
In the meantime, it may not sound earth-shattering, but a one-year reduction in biological age isn’t to be sniffed at. ‘If sustained, it’s linked with significantly lower risk of premature death and disease.’ Dr Sehgal says. ‘Biological ageing is a continuous process and decelerating its pace even slightly can yield long-term dividends.’
