Fermented Foods and Healthy Aging: What Does the Evidence Say?

I’ve been interested in the role of everyday foods in long-term health, particularly fermented foods such as kefir, yogurt, and other cultured dairy products.

Milk kefir is made by fermenting milk with kefir grains. It contains live microorganisms when the finished product retains viable cultures, along with nutrients such as protein and calcium. However, the health effects can vary by product, and more research is needed to understand its long-term effects on human health and aging.

I’m curious how others here approach fermented foods as part of a broader nutrition and healthy-aging plan.

A few questions for the community:

  • Do you regularly include fermented foods in your diet?
  • Have you found any reliable human studies on kefir and metabolic or gut health?
  • How do you separate promising early research from proven health benefits?

I’d be interested in hearing evidence-based perspectives and links to relevant research.

We’ve discussed it many times here, you can use the search icon in the upper right hand side of the screen. Just type in Kefir and it will give a long list of discussions. There’s good evidence for oral health and therefore heart health. A little sketchier for parkinsons and ALS, but I believe in it from my Dad’s personal experience with ALS. We use raw goat milk, but to be honest it does not work as well as whole pasteurized and homogenized cow milk. No comparison really. Good Luck,
