Extreme Dry Eyes and Voltaren

Does anyone have any issues with long term use of Voltaren? What kind of dose should be considered safe? So far from what I read it is safe.

This is the exact kind of thing that a primary care physician should be good at. As far as I know, all the NSAIDs have similar risks for long term systemic use, which are significant enough to seek medical advice for. If you’re using the topical product according to the label, most of the risks are mitigated.

None of these drugs will, to within my knowledge of current evidence, make you live longer unless you need pain management to be active.

What kind of Voltaren are you talking about? Voltaren topical cream is generally very safe as its systemic absorption is about 1/20 th of the oral form. Voltaren eye drops could certainly cause dry eyes.

Naproxen has been associated with longevity although studies were weak.

I am not talking in terms of longevity. Rather as a pain relief for dry eye pains. lol. There are no longevity benefit from Voltaren as far as I know. I use it to manage gout pains normally … either that or naproxen.

I’m still confused. Are you using Voltaren eye drops to treat dry eyes?

No. 100mg voltaren pill to control the pain for the eyes.

Ok, there are medications specifically for dry eyes. I would not recommend an oral nsaid for dry eyes. What does your eye doctor recommend?

It is really the last option… for pain relief for something I have in my cupboard at the time. Anyway I ended up with Patanol 0.1% eye drop 2x a day. Voltaren is only used when nothing else seems to work and it works.

I had a deep stabbing eye pain post Covid- opthalmologist said could see nothing but the pain woke me up through the night. I found Zaditen in day helpful (anti inflammatory, antihistamine eye drop) and the high dose PEA (orthoplex) OR full spectrum CBD took away my occipital neuralgia. Am still pain free of that.

The original article you shared is from 1975. We have learned much about the long term side effects from chronic use of NSAIDs. It is ideal to address the dry eye syndrome DIRECTLY at the source (Meibomian glands). The ducts are often clogged and need to be flushed. If that is not adquate, one can pursue a trial of regenerative Meibomian gland injections.

Thank you and you are right. My dry eye has improved so much with a simple warm eyebag compress. Has made a big difference- doing it twice a day now and not needing any eyedrops.
