Exercise and medication trial
.
Why are we doing this study?
This study investigates changes in muscle strength with low dose Rapamycin treatment in combination with an exercise programme.
Information about the study
Muscles undergo changes with aging. Characterized by a decline in muscle mass and strength of about 1% per year from the age of around 40 years, this is known as sarcopenia. Evidence suggests that reduced muscle is associated with poorer health outcomes. Ultimately, muscle wasting contributes significantly to weakness, disability, increased hospitalization, immobility, and loss of independence. Exercise and nutrition can help to improve sarcopenia by building muscle, but also contribute to improved well-being, physical function, quality of life, and decreased inflammation.
The purpose of this study is to:
-
Evaluate changes in muscle strength and endurance following weekly low dose Rapamycin treatment in combination with an exercise programme
-
Evaluate whether low dose Rapamycin treatment is safe and well tolerated in an older population
Who can take part in this study?
People who:
-
Are aged between 65 and 85
-
Are normally fit and well and do not perform moderate regular exercise (less than 15 minutes of exercise, three times a week)
-
Are willing to perform an exercise program on an exercycle 3 times a week
