Has anyone tried creatine as an alternative to methylfolate/folinic acid? 2g daily should reduce methyl demand by 40% potentially eliminating the need.
Chris Masterjohn convinced me that most diets are probably folate deficient. I now try to eat fresh (not frozen or canned) vegetables, and fresh beef liver when possible. I have not tried a folate or folic acid supplement. Our food distribution system is amazing. The fresh apples at the store might be a year old . Perhaps they were stored in a cool room with dry nitrogen. How much folate do they still contain? I wonât be eating any polar bear liver (can be deadly due to vitamin A overdose), but I have eaten a bit of beluga whale blubber.
Thatâs interesting because I tested folate on pre-op bariatric surgery patients and rarely saw a deficiency. That was just a blood level.
When we did see it low, the presumption was very low vegetable consumption and I feel like someone did a study which showed that this correlated with lower weight loss after surgery. We didnât both testing for methylation issues but perhaps should have.
Some people were driven low after surgery despite supplements - all patients are given 400 mcg non methylated. You could see they were taking it as other vitamin levels were fine including the high B12 which was a marker of compliance. Those low folates were typically tested and needed to switch to methylated. So surgery would expose their need for methylated.
85% of Americans donât get the recommended veges per day and that is just the 5 fruits and vegetables recommendation which is probably inadequate. So I am sure the deficiency is pretty common. But that doesnât mean it is common to someone with a reasonable diet - which is probably more like 5 veges plus a few fruit per day.
