Does anyone find it interesting how Matt Kaeberlein seems to have warmed up to Aubrey de Grey?

Like, Matt is now tweeting selfies about himself with AdG and openly praising conferences AdG helped organize.

This is like quite a contrast from the years long ago when he and Preston Estep really critiqued AdG’s SENS and felt it wasn’t scientific
(it’s impt to note AdG was always v. tight with Brian Kennedy, who was a close collaborator with MK for a long time)

I think AdG’s new organization also just… is less ambitious but produces way more testable predictions…

There is no logical reason to countersignal Aubrey so I’m glad people are warming up to him.

These overly conservative types wouldn’t have anything to conserve if Aubrey and people like him hadn’t been so aggressive in spearheading longevity escape velocity over mere healthspan.

Aubrey was charged with a sex offense at Cambridge or some other university. He lost his position. Do not know what the outcome was. He has millions of his own so can hire the best attorneys.

I think Matt is generally really kind even though he can initially seem harsh on some people if their claims aren’t “scientific” enough or if they have a pattern of overplaying their claims (everyone other than David Sinclair ofc…)

Although I have my disagreements with Aubrey I think his science is generally quite good. The same applies for Matt, but I wish he was more like Peter Lidsky in his willingness to engage in scientific discussion on say twitter. Aubrey is better this way even if he is a bit precious.

Aubrey pivoted to more testable claims after he “left” SENS for the new (less ambitious) mouse lifespan project, this seems to coincide with MK seeming to become warmer towards him

MK is generally an interesting barometer of testable vs overly sensationalist rhetoric/sloppy science, and a good barometer of “rushed science/science done badly” (he’s known for being critical for lower-integrity people who are too aggressive on overhyping supplements). His skepticism can sometimes be a bit high (or he might lag a bit with “fads” that later turn more legit than anyone thought), but he is always open to changing his mind.

Ofc MK has sometimes been critical of BJ but also credits BJ with being funny

You guys have to realize that even when people don’t agree on something, they can still be friends and work together for the greater good. I’ve never seen either of these two guys be angry and hate on anyone.

This isn’t politics where you’re supposed to cut off all your friends and family and cancel Christmas if you don’t feel the same way about the covid vaccine.

I think it’s clear to MK the Aubrey is primarily science based in his approach. He may have beliefs about the future that are on the more optimistic side, but they’re not completely impossible and he never claims that we already have the solution to aging to anything like that. He’s optimistic in his predictions but hard nosed about the current reality.
