Book Recommendations: Aging and Longevity

He is biased towards veganism, that is true

But, at the same time, his looks have NOTHING to do with anything that comes out of his mouth. If you think looks matter, then I’ll point you to gorgeous very fit vegans with enviable bodies… but those people are irrelevant, too. If looks matter though, they you will have to start listening to those people.

I know genetically gifted people who live on fast food. I go bonkers when people pick on someone’s looks because it’s not fair or very kind. You can pick on what comes out of his mouth.

They take in enough plant-protein though. And yes, appearence matters. You can’t say your method X is working for you if your biggest organ, your skin, looks older than your physical age.

I don’t believe people are picking on his looks per se. But, his looks belie what he is preaching.
It would be the same as if someone was touting a sun tanning procedure and looked pale as a ghost, we wouldn’t believe them. If your procedure is so great, why are you pale?

But the factors that have the biggest impact on skin health (UV radiation/sun exposure, etc.) really have nothing to do with his diet (or very little) so I really don’t see any relationship between his skin care regimen and his area of dietary / nutritional focus and advice.

EXACTLY THIS!

And, @Virilius, not that it’s relevant, but I’ve never even seen much of his skin, but what I have seen looks good… but to RapAdmin’s point, skin quality is mostly from sun damage and also genetics. I have people tell me they should follow my diet because I look good for my age, I say have at it, but nope, it’s all about my Mom! My non vegan brother and sister have equally good skin and look good for their ages.

And I also respectfully disagree @desertshores that he has to be the poster child of good health in order for what he says to be taken seriously. For example, I have heart disease, yet I have an extremely healthy lifestyle and am WFPB, so if I were an expert, people would say, well, if what she said was true, then her health would be better. I’m also just a very outspoken advocate for all the people out there who are not genetically gifted in our looks-ist society and I am admittedly easily triggered.

Wow, this thread turned mind boggling. Apparently, a yearly check up should just entail a doctor looking at a picture of your face to determine your health.

Statistically, someone who looks like a zombie (not refering to anyone in particular) wil die way earlier than someone who looks 20 years younger than their age.

HAHA, yeah sure. Would love to see these statistics.

I don’t know. All those super centenarians have lousy skin. And they all claim booze is great. Color me skeptical.

People who do CR lose fat under/in their skin and don’t look as plumb and young, but their other bloodwork and many other markers have generally improved (and if I recall also other aspects of their skin health, like less senescence).

You can follow how a lot of Bryan Johnson’s skin procedures have been with the goal to reverse that fat loss from his CR.

Think there actually might a higher fat => your perceived face thing to some extent going on more broadly.

Yes - I would argue that Bryan Johnson looked much younger in 2018, but is in much better physiological shape in 2024 despite looking much older than before…

But we are digressing…

His hair went from red to black in one year. Never mind, that’s probably normal.

He was doing high intensity light treatments for one of his companies which lightened his hair, bleaching it.

Let us know if you come across any interesting insights. Siim Land is still at #3 on the Rejuvenation Olympics Leaderboard. But he’s also young (29). His website says:
“So, based on the current evidence, there’s no reason for me to take either rapamycin or metformin because at my age I have very little to gain even mechanistically. In fact, at my age, rapamycin and metformin could potentially have negative side effects.”

Those are all great staples. I take them daily as well. Although not as much glycine as he does!
