My mother is quite diabetic (8.8 HBA1C). She just can’t help herself from eating candy, donuts and potato chips. I think the only way I can help her is by having other snacks she can go to instead of the ones that will kill her.
I know that veggies, berries, fruit and nuts are all good stuff, but is there anything out there that really is wonderful for a sweet tooth but not kill her with diabetes?
I’m looking for some inspiration to help save my mother’s life. Thanks in advance for any and all ideas!
Also, she’s already taking 2 g of Metformin, 25 mg of Empagliflozin and 80 mg of Telmisartan daily. Any other med I’ve missed?
For a while I made potato chips from sweet potato that I would slice, and then dry in a dehydrator. Tasted great with some herbs and/or a bit of olive oil or homemade humus, and didn’t make b/g levels spike. But it was time invasive to prepare.
News summary above says one ounce a day, or 28 grams. One piece of Hershey’s kisses weighs 4.5 grams. So that is six pieces kisses, in equivalent weight. One third of a Ghirardelli (three squares).
Just have to be careful to watch for added sugar in dark chocolate. For example Schogetten dark chocolate from Aldi has 13g added sugar per serving compared to 3g per serving in Moser Roth dark chocolate.
I know prunes (organic) great for post menopause re bones- so I recommend this as a sweet snack. Also high in fibre. (I have mine in the morning with pre-soaked almonds, blueberrfies or apricots and the prunes.
When I want almost zero sugar spike, I go to straight fat–or almost straight: flavored whipped tallow and lard drops. My favorite flavor: pumpkin puree/pumpkin spice/coconut/stevia, dusted with cocoa powder. Delicious and about 100 calories each. I think I’ll do have one now.
