Is an apple watch simply an expensive pedometer? What am I missing and what apps are the best for health monitoring?
I ditched my Apple Watch for a Fitbit… It’s five times cheaper, has all the same functions, and is even more accurate with my heart rate. I am very satisfied.
No, it has another feature: it tells you what time it is.
But seriously, time, distance, elevation, heart rate, O2 sat, phone, messages, email, Apple Pay, weather, start my truck, and just about anything else you need.
I have an Apple watch, of course you need an iPhone to use it. I use the health app every day. You can probably look up all the features but briefly there is Activity and this tracks your steps but also workouts, calories burned, heart rate over time of the workout, gait speed, etc and trends over time and more (METs etc). The motility part assesses the asymmetry of your walking and some other stuff. The Cardiac feature has resting heart rate, HRV, can do a EKG, will alert for arrhythmias. Body temp, weight can be tracked, medications, blood oxygen. Mood (if you use it) can be correlated with how much sleep you get and a couple other trends. It can do VO2Max when you walk outside too with your phone. But this is very brief and I would just look at the features and then compare it to Fitbit which likely does not require an iPhone. I will say I never regretted getting it.
The thing I like most about the Apple Watch is having a “phone” with me on a bike ride in case of emergency.
