A Call for a New National Institute for Longevity and Aging Research (NILAR)

On June 14, 2024, Chair Cathy McMorris-Rodgers proposed a reform of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), aiming to improve clarity and transparency, increase oversight, and eliminate silos within the current structure. While reform is indeed necessary, the proposal to rename the National Institute on Aging (NIA) to the National Institute on Dementia threatens to undermine the progress the NIA has made in aging biology over the past 50 years.

A4LI holds a unique position and opportunity to continue fostering discoveries in aging biology. We recognize that longevity and aging research will become a central focus of the NIH as the number of older Americans is expected to rise exponentially. As an organization dedicated to ending the threat of age-related diseases and making longevity medicines accessible and equitable, we are motivated by this reform and are proposing the establishment of a new institute, the National Institute for Longevity and Aging Research (NILAR). NILAR will increase support for aging biology research and drive innovative solutions that accelerate the translation of scientific breakthroughs into therapies, ultimately benefiting the health and wellness of all.

Below is an outlined proposal that requires your endorsement and signature. This will be submitted to the Energy and Commerce Committee before the stakeholders’ deadline on August 16, 2024.

I have some experience on how these things work. I think the best approach is for those people who live in the USA to write to their representatives in congress and ask them to write to the committee.

Me as someone in the UK writing has almost no effect. Also elected representatives are concerned about their voters views not anyone else.
