124-Year-Old Man Climbs Mount Everest

I thought you all might get a kick out of this because it’s longevity related!

I used AI to create pics of myself from 100 years ago, and also created modern-day pics of me on Mount Everest. I wrote a “backstory” post that I thought was clearly satire, but tons of folks are leaving comments of support for the “124-year-old” who’s climbing Everest.

Wow, you look great at 124, Phil. Lol

Really hard to know what’s real these days. It’s not the people it’s the institutions.

A great story, but a sad commentary on the gullibility of humanity

This sort of reminds me of the Peter Attia episode with Annie Duke and the concept of “Back Casting”… envisioning the future you want for yourself, then defining what you need to do today to achieve it.

Athletes do this all the time - visualize the race, the feat, etc. that you want to learn or practice, then go and do it for real… seems like it would apply here.

Perhaps this would help in making more rich / compelling our “back casting” efforts!

This is the life I want when I’m 124 - envision it, creat it in ChatGPT and visually via AI, then work towards it…

By the way, I like mountaineering and love trekking around Nepal - its a beautiful country.

But Everest seems to have become a complete shit-show when it comes to climbing, and I’ve completely lost interest in the mountains that are higher traffic…

Disgusting! That’s really sad.

Sir Edmund Percival Hillary and Sherpa mountaineer Tenzing Norgay climbed it in 1953. I was in junior high school at the time. I remember reading about it in Life Magazine and what a great accomplishment it was after previous failures. They also had to use oxygen tanks.
It is amazing to me how easy it seems to be for dedicated and experienced mountaineers.
When China controlled Mt. Everest they limited expeditions to two per year.
It seems to me that something like that needs to be instigated again. They also should be collecting fees, if they don’t already, to finance cleanups.
Again, why does it seem to be so easy now, relatively speaking, to climb Mt. Everest?
Training, physical fitness, what?

The fee to apply for a permit to climb Everest;

Permits and Insurance $9,950 – $29,500. Nepal has an $11,000 permit fee per individual. It simply allows a climber to climb.Feb 2, 2023

Just takes money.

I think the key difference is that you can now very easily hire large numbers of sherpas to carry all the gear into basecamp - so people don’t have to carry their own equipment and food for the entire climb. Plus all the ropes are already set up for people now for most parties - so you can just follow in the person’s footsteps who went before you. And of course equipment is much better and lighter than it was 50 years ago.

I really like this idea of using AI to create photos of yourself at very advanced years and being vibrant and healthy… just to try to visualize what we’re shooting for. I have no idea if climbing everest at 124 is a good goal for me lol, but whatever lights up your brain and gets you motivated to do the things you need to do maintain your fitness and health today.

Phil,

What AI image processing app did you use for the photos you created?

It’s called Retrato . . . you can download it for both iphone and android! Try to give it 30 pics of yourself to train it on what you look like for the best results.

Could be because humanity’s collective mental barrier has been broken.

After Roger Bannister broke the four-minute barrier. John Landy of Australia bested Bannister’s record just 35 days later. A year after, three runners broke the four-minute barrier in a single race.

This actually makes a lot of sense . . . I’m sure that’s part of it. Better technology, better gear, and the fact that the trail is now “blazed” makes it easier too

Hahaha!
I relinquish my title of: “the Ageless Guy” to you Phil. Great story! Killing it at 124 years.

So, you just multiplied your current age by 3 to get 124?

Lol . . . no, I just liked these five pictures the most out of the 100+ random ones that the AI program generated. So I put them all together and thought up a backstory for them. I thought the first one looked like it could have been taken in 1917, and it looks like me at 18 years old. So birth year: 1899, would make me 124 this year.

I write and post about AI stuff a lot, so I assumed everyone would know that it was a satirical story that I wrote to go along with the AI photos. I wasn’t trying to “trick” anyone, but I had no idea that so many people would think it was true.

Top !
Really nice job :joy:

There a big difference between it being possible for a normal genetics, well trained, very fit human to climb Mr Everest, and it being “easy” to do so. There is nothing easy about it beside getting a permit and a flight to the country.

I used to be a mountaineer. I decided against climbing Everest due to the risk of losing body parts to frostbite. I like having toes. Toes are useful for many fun things in life.

Nice photo!
