Can you please post the study? Can’t find it.
For the record I have a giant sauna in my garage — waiting for the electrician to come draw 220V from my porch’s outlet. If only the supplier had also thrown in a Chinese electrician in the box — with enough crackers and pedialite he would have survived across ocean and I could have paid his return trip on a first class flight and still come out ahead. The electrician doing this simple thing will cost almost as much as the sauna itself.
But it feels so wonderful I’m surprised @DrT hates it. It would almost be unfair if something so good also let you live longer.
Re: The Finns’ life expectancy I don’t think it’s fair to jump to any conclusions. There might be other things they do wrong that other Scandinavians do right so it might be a wash. US life expectancy is tied with that of Albania. What conclusions can be drawn on what Albanians are doing right vs wrong? Nothing unless you dig deeper.
my unassembled shit collecting dust waiting for the electrician to be so good as to come take my money.
Sorry; humour is often lost in simple text.
Just keep in mind that originally saunas in scandanavian/slavic countries were used as natural contraceptives for men as it slows down sperm motility (not the number of sperm just their motility). It is called heat based contraception. Simply by increasing the scrotul temperture by 2-6 degrees Celsius we are jeopardizing sperm quality and in essence also hindering testosterone optimization .
Unknowingly, this heat based contraception occurs throughout our day as we sit when we work, drive eat, etc… , and also use electronic devices. Adding a sauna into that will just aggravate the sperm quality. However, I enjoy the sauna too much to stop it.
So, a general recomendation (even when not utilizing saunas) which many biohackers do is icing your balls, through your boxers of course, for 10 minutes , 1-4 times daily. You might see a testosterone boost as well. Here’s some more info on that:

Exercise seems more beneficial than sauna, but this again could come to does increasing natural inflammation/anti oxidants in the body help if your taking certain external anti oxidants?
too much sauna ages your skin? Rhonda Patrick has aged quite a bit and is a fanatic sauna fan. I myself a regular sauna user have noticed while my skin became smoother I have lost some of the “baby fat” esp. in the eye area.
And this is her one year ago:
It could also be she ODed on omega 3 as Dave Asprey (yes questionable at times) has stated that too much fish oil makes it a sunken face based on his own experiences.
Next you’ll tell me cold plunges don’t have long term lifespan benefit
I suspect that will be the case.
Actually, no good studies that I could find. Certainly none about extending lifespan.
I am not saying it has no benefits, but the studies are weak and the benefits are preceded by
“may”
She’s probably having sun exposure without sunscreen as she look tanned. I guess she didn’t know that irradiating the skin like that is proven to age the skin and all of the dermatologists will know she did it…
Not sure why she doesn’t join the immortal vampire / engineer (from prometheus) gang. Leave nature behind and get enhanced.
Well – our new home, we are building out on 21 acres, way out in the sticks in central TN will have a sauna in the gym and a cold plunge adjacent to it. Have waited to be in this position for decades now … as our youngest is now at college and we are leaving civilization!
I don’t know if the sauna/cold has health benefit, but it’s going in and I’ll know when I have my massive MI jumping in the cold plunge from the sauna.
I find it odd that people actually enjoy this. I like a sauna, but I think I will skip the cold plunge.
did you read my post? I was saying the possible effect on the skin only. No reason to jump in to attack people by sharing something anecdotally.
Instead of measuring whether saunas are healthy, perhaps we should measure perspiration as the health-inducing Mechanism of Action. Sweating is good, and many people don’t like to sweat. Hence the saying “No Sweat.” Sweat is the body’s natural detoxification, thermoregulation, and stress reduction mechanism.
I am all for sauna and I have one at home. I am merely stating that in my case, the skin part seems to be seeing some stress if one does it daily for an extended time. And I see RH, Peter Attia, and Huberman, all big fans of sauna, their faces do not look exactly “young” or “younger” and I have followed them long enough and I know sunscreen is a part of their regimen.
Another instance of debate going on is Omega 3 where RH is for it, BJ has dropped DHA:
"Well, in this corner we have Dr Rhonda Patrick showcasing research that higher blood levels of EPA and DHA (including from supplementation) are linked to reduced mortality: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sxxy6bUlX28
And in this corner, I think (because I can‘t find the clip where BJ explains it) we have BJ dropping DHA supplements entirely because of concerns about its propensity to oxidize both before and after consumption."
Interesting observation and thanks for this. We will certainly observe for this.
Our DHA/EPA is goaled to just achieve 8% Omega 3 index how OmegaQuant measures this - so our total is under 1 gram per day of DHA+EPA - so hopefully my face doesn’t get any uglier due to that factor.
I suspect the sweating may be part of it - but is there an effect of heat shock proteins? I don’t know, I’ve not looked into enough; I more fancy the thought of having the sauna, and doubt that it is unhealthy; but will need to make sure there is no cosmetic downside.
I know some people go up to absurd temperatures and I wonder if that is a component where the folks really just going for it at near boiling temperatures get some damage, where those that have a moderate heat and sweat it out might not? Just speculating. Others on the board will know a lot more than I do on this. Anyone have thoughts on this?
Source for this claim?
There is still DHA in his supplement list so what do you mean?
I love the sauna, but I also take piping hot baths each night. I am convinced that’s a good thing, too!

BJ constantly tinkers with his blueprint. It’s on his discord which is quite active: Blueprint discord link here and
