Incase this was not answered yet. I’ve done aprox 12 rounds of prolon. Sadly, the fasting bars are not even close to what is in the 5 days of prolon boxes. They are vile! They gave me countless boxes of those bars for free I had to dump them. Couldn’t even give them away
I do calorie restriction combined with once weekly 10 mg rapamycin. I have been doing so for 5 years. I believe there are combined benefits as rapamycin targets a subset of genes that cr does. With respect of intermittent fasting as I eat only when I’m hungry, I may wind up eating only during 3 hour window or so during a day. That said after carefully reviewing a research, there doesn’t seem to be any good evidence that there is any value beyond calorie restrictions to intermittent fasting. Further if for you intermittent fasting or cr negatively impacts your interest in exercise or your muscle body mass, I’d stay away from it.
What was it that you hated so much about the fasting bars?
I loved the bars in the prolon 5 day fasting box
I just thought the other bars that are sold separately are too gross tasting to eat. Everyone is of course different and I’m sure many people like them. Fwiw, I’m in a prolon facebook group and many people fee the same way. So, if you should ever want to try them, i suggest only buying one box ?
Here’s a study showing the fasting bar works
Seems like a good study design but conflict of interest abound.
I’m preparing for an interview with one of the study authors.
Beth, How long did it take for you to complete the 12 rounds? Would you mind telling us more about the results? Thank you, and if you answered this else where, I apologize.
Sure thing @theflatiron!
I just did another round a couple weeks ago, so I think I’ve now completed 14 rounds.
I started in March or April of 2020 to hopefully make me as healthy as possible during Covid.
Aprox…
I probably did it every quarter the first year, then perhaps 3 times per year the next couple of years. Then 2x per year and then I just did one that was the first time in a year.
I don’t have an interesting story to share because I didn’t notice any positive effects, but I was not disappointed because I did it for the long term invisible health benefits.
My labs did not improve (having said that, my only negative labs are thyroid and lipids), but I like to believe I killed off some potential cancer cells! :).
I was probably 112lbs-115-ish in 2020 and then over the years I lost a few and would bounce around between 106-109. I don’t even think most of it was from Prolon. Due to covid, I mostly ate at home for several years (I almost never cooked before covid!) which also meant almost no drinking (I’d only drink when out to dinner).
I didn’t do it for weight, but because so many people are curious, I’ll mention that during my rounds I would loose 0 pounds or up to 5 pounds. No rhyme or reason why. I’d gain most or all of it back within a month each and every time. This time, I lost too much weight, and am working on gaining it back… (champagne problems, I know!).
@Joseph_Lavelle mentions that he feels a lot of his aches and pains go away when he does it. For me, aside from an occasional back issue and my chronic bad knees (chondromalacia), I don’t really have any other body issues to notice… is this why I don’t have them, who knows?
Thank you, Beth for your sharing your FMD story. That was helpful.
Dr. Longo shared recently that a Brazilian doc is successfully using FMD coupled with Liraglutide (Victoza and Saxenda)
Here’s what I have learned about Liraglutide:
Liraglutide is another widely used GLP-1 agonist. It is sold under two brand names: Victoza and Saxenda. Victoza is used to treat type 2 diabetes and is taken once a day. Saxenda, on the other hand, is used specifically for weight loss and is also taken once daily. Liraglutide works similarly to exenatide by helping to regulate blood sugar levels and reduce appetite. It is often prescribed because it has been shown to be effective in both controlling blood sugar and aiding in significant weight loss. Liraglutide has also been found to have cardiovascular benefits, making it a preferred choice for patients with a high risk of heart disease.
Given your knowledge of FMD and being on the Facebook group, are you aware of any discussion using Liraglutide coupled with FMD?
Thank you,
theflatiron
Hi @theflatiron
I just searched for Liraglutide in the FB group and nothing came up. Note, even if I found anyone talking about it, I wouldn’t pay much attention. I joined that group many years ago and I find the participants and admins (who work for prolon) to be entirely unhelpful and clueless. They are more there to be cheerleaders and answer questions about what happens if I ate something else, can I add butter, etc.
To find real info, you need to contact Longo’s foundation,., you know, not the prolon salespeople trying to sell prolon to people using it as a way to lose weight. (It drives me batty!).
Having said all that, unless anything has changed, the legit answer is:
“We don’t know if that will affect the results of prolon because it was not used during the studies”.
