Longevity Briefs: Do Olympic Champions Age More Slowly?

While I stand by my previous post (healthspan is more important, and is the metric which is more affected by exercise vis-a-vis lifespan), I’m a little more bullish on it than you are, and suspect we will just agree to disagree. I see very very few people maintaining what I would consider to be vigorous exercise programs through their entire life, and so I think there aren’t many people who reap all the available benefits of exercise. The VAST majority, even folks interested in longevity, start to take it pretty easy after midlife.

High grade inflammation is one factor to consider. I also wonder what extreme physical exhaustion, during many years, does to our stem cell niche and to our capacity to heal later in life. We don’t know, but overdoing exercise is not a good thing. Just like over doing fasting, or any other intervention. The dose makes the poison or the cure, when it comes to having a healthy body.

Thanks joseph. Most athletes that overdo it are violently obsessive.

I probably put in between 13 and 16 hours a week.

I have found that above the high end of that range is not sustainable because I start to accumulate minor injuries, which is my warning I am going too far. My opinion is that this is a good standard, wherever you end up. For some I know, over four hours is too much, and that is how they know.
