Also, my B12 is kept high… went up this time. Only slightly above range. But, my doctor said fine. Great for neurological function - cognitive function - mental health, energy function.
He likes numbers as high as possible within the normal range… testosterone estradiol, potassium… etc.
@Agetron I need to test again. I’ve been unable to get much sunshine lately plus I just had some cancer cut out of my back. I’ve been taking Vitamin D3 as Calcifediol for a year now as I’m convinced Vit D is low hanging fruit. My last test was 42 after a year of high dose supplementation. I’m aiming for 60-80 but using hand grenades instead of a sniper rifle
Thanks. Yes a lump (or so I’m told…it was on my back). It quickly became a wound with the skin broken. A photo was taken. By the time I got into the doctor, it was healed enough to not look like anything. The photo looked suspicious so a biopsy was taken. And sure enough it was a Squamish cell. I’m now using a cream to kill it.
I think it will help. I got off rapa last summer after I got sick twice and felt off for 5 months. I think my immune system was down; I quit rapa and fasting to let the immune function come back to full power. I’d guess that’s when the cancer got away. I’m back to full power now; stronger than ever; healthy as a young Joe. Rapa to restart soon but this time I’m going to follow a Kaeberlein protocol rather than the every month big dose (7mg w/GFj) combined with monthly FMD approach I was using. That was too much stress apparently.
My D is in range but sub-optimal at 31, a score that should be expected from a non-supplementing, sun-avoiding subject with pale Irish skin. Truly, I hate the sun, except for the distant sun of a northern winter. I love to watch that winter sun go down.
Hi Joe,
I just finished up having 3 basal cells removed myself. The worst one was in the corner of my right eye so it required MOHS followed by reconstructive surgery. Everything went well, both doctors were pleased with the outcomes of their respective procedures and also impressed with my health otherwise but needless to say it’s put me off any sort of unprotected sun exposure permanently. I never want to go through that again! Any opinions on how long I should wait to start back on rapa from you or anyone here would be appreciated!
A new paper suggests that vitamin D might accelerate aging:
Conversely, vitamins B12 and D exhibited negative weights, indicating potential antagonistic effects (Fig. 1 and Tables S16-S18).
An interesting finding was the negative weights observed for vitamins B12 and D, suggesting their associations with biological aging were in the opposite direction to the overall protective effect of the mixture.
@Joseph_Lavelle Damn, sorry to hear about the squamous cell carcinoma. Glad you got it sorted in time.
SCC (and Basal cell @blsm ) are super strongly related to cumulative UV exposure. I would definitely be taking strong precautions against sun exposure now.
And for the topic in general, with no supplementation at all, my baseline Vitamin D was 39ng/dl.
I currently supplement 5,000 IU per day in summer and 15,000 IU per day in winter. My latest Vitamin D test was 65ng/ml.
Personally I don’t notice a single difference from raising my level. I suppose I’ve never been deficient enough to have any negative effects.
With my super light skin, freckles etc, I stay away from the sun when the UV index is any higher than 3. Since turning around 30, I am quite strict with sunscreen use, and more recently have been using UV protective clothing. Something like SCC/BCC would be quite likely in a person like me, but at least they’re not super dangerous. Melanoma, on the other hand, scares the hell out of me.
Thanks. I’m just not afraid of skin cancer I suppose. I do regret the photoaging from not protecting myself better. I always used hats when climbing in Colorado but avoided sunscreen most of my life due to acne effects. I still believe in a daily dose of UV (a few minutes) and a lot of NIR (in the shade outdoors). I avoid any sunburn now but was ignorant for a long time.
@blsm Good luck on your recovery. Issues on the face are super tough on the ego; good job addressing it. I bet you’ll hardly notice it after you let it heal. I had 100 stitches under my eye after a “touch” football game many years ago……sun block on the scar everyday for 5 years. The scar eventually vanished.
I’m hoping someone from the medical community can weigh in here about rapa. My advice would be less than worthless. My personal behavior is to avoid rapamycin while needing to heal or fight infection. I believe rapa is good for healing/ immune function in the long term but very bad in the short term.
I once made the error of taking rapa a day after contracting the flu (before symptoms arrived). Now I know what the flu is like for elderly people with weakened immune systems.
There is an interesting question about the rate of conversion of cholecalciferol into calcifediol. It will vary from person to person, but I think it starts hitting limits around 3000iu
